Tail swaps
« on: March 01, 2010, 12:27:57 PM »
Ok so I'm going round various places looking for bits n pieces to do to the Thundercat when she turns up.

I'd like to swap the tail unit for something a bit cooler (R1 / Duke 848 are top of the list) and maybes do the front as well (Sheps says an R1 can go on).

Thing is, I've nae a clue how to start. Is it possible to get conversion kits? Should I stick with one manufacturer (ie Yam to Yam bits)? Should I build a mock up to suit something I've bought?  Help!

Could we get a 'how to' from someone in the know?

I'd say commit to doing it, chop the cat subby off now!

Cut it off as damn close to the frame as you can but dont touch the frame with yer disc (buy 1mm cutting discs for this).
Once its off get as much of it on eblag as possible.

Going back to whats left stuck on the frame......120 grit disc in yer grinder and gently grind off as much as the surplus as you can without touching the frame.......stop when its a gnats proud of the frame.

Now stick scothbrite in yer grinder, and put it flat on the bit left thats proud. The technique now is to use a gentle side to side motion without adding much pressure until it starts scuffing either side on the frame.

Always keep your grinder flat and moving when finishing, dont ever dig at it with the grinder, Flat, slow and gentle being the key words :big grin:

I am using an XJR1300 tail piece chopped and slimmed down, mostly because i had it in the workshop, but also coz they dont get used too often, and they are quite short, perfect for the single seat look.
