Speedo Extension
By: William Vermaak (stingsoft@mweb.co.za)

Now then, I had a problem with my voltage regulator, so I had to find a way of monitoring my bike’s charging. Easy, add a volt meter … Not so easy. Where do I put it? Well I had it tie wrapped to my speedo. Not so very good. Then I came up with this plan. Why not extend the instrument panel.
What you’ll need:
1x Paintbrush
1x Fiberglass repair kit
1x Bit of tin foil
1x Scissor
1x Piece of cardboard

Now let’s do this in steps.
1. Cut the template out of the cardboard.
2. Cut the template out of fiberglass sheets. I’ve used about 6. Cut out only the outside lines. The holes we’ll deal with later. I know mine has holes in it, but I only decided to take photos once I was half way ?
3. Take a piece of tinfoil and build yourself a small container to keep any excess resin off the table.

4. Next mix the resin and hardener following the directions of the supplier. Mine was 40 drops hardener per 100 ml resin.
5. Now place all the sheets you’ve cut to size on top of each other inside the tinfoil container you’ve constructed.
6. Using a brush, dab the resin on the fiberglass. Continue this until the fiberglass is fully impregnated with resin. It will become gel like and transparent.
7. Leave your creation for about 24hours to set completely. My third one only worked because I was too hasty with the whole thing. Make sure it is set completely before handling. (And out of reach of the cats ? )
8. Now that it has set, you can remove the tinfoil. It sticks a bit, but should peel of quite easily. If it’s still a bit sticky on the bottom, leave it in the sun belly up to make it set a bit quicker.
9. Now that there are no more sticky parts we can start finishing it off. The whole thing is probably a bit larger than we want it, so take the template again and mark off where the sides must be.
10. Now using sand paper or a bench grinder, gently grind it to size and smooth the edges.
11. Now we must make the holes. This is done quite easily with a hole saw fitting that you fit to the drill. Drill out the holes as close as you can to the template. Of course make sure the extra hole is the correct size for the gauge you intend to install in it.
12. Once all the holes are in, finish it a bit with the sanding paper and size it for the last time.
13. Now you can sand down the front side of the fitting to make it nice and smooth.

14. Now all that is left is to paint it.
15. Fitting is quite easy. Remove the front fairing, headlights and the entire console.
16. Remove the Rev Counter, Speedometer and Temp Gauge. Followed by the sponge between the gauges.
17. Now fit the new extension you made over the holes in the Console mounting bracket. Fit the sponge, and replace all the gauges.
18. Replace the Console, Headlight & Front Fairing.
19. Voila, one standard speedo extension.
