It's always a risk buying a new engine, because it's far too easy to lie! I bet you they all claim to have 20,000 miles on!

Every bloody ZX9R engine I've ever seen on Ebay was changed at 20,000 miles!
The best bet is to get the cheapest and if possible go and see it yourself first. The better seller will say they saw it running - but then so will the rest...
Good luck!

When you view it do a comp test, run it up off its starter motor using a 12v battery and leads. Remove the pulsar cover and check if the tensioner is fully extended and try to select through the box (sometimes a problem on zxr4's due to them ball bearing things between 1st and 2nd). All three of those should tell you whether its alright or not, buts obviously not 100%.
Lad I met bought a 2nd motor blind from a commercial breaker in Bristol, said it was a UK one (was an import) and was working perfectly (head gasket was fecked and needed replacing). It's always a risk

If I was buying a second hand engine I'd only use it after I'd rebuilt it............particulary if it came from someone I didn't know.
Seems to me that if you are in the position of needed a complete engine then it would make sense to rebuild and refurbish it while it was sittting there on the bench before putting it in the frame.
Lots of rubbish knackered engines out there..................................... buyer beware

errm, one of em was in the bike when i brought it, the clocks read just under 50000km but thrs a converter on it, not sure how many are miles n how many r km. my mates dad fitted a new head gasket in this 1. the other one had sp cams in it no idea weather its an sp engine, unsure of milage. they both run but make a horrible rattle/knocking noise, ive taken the cams out now tho, theyre on ebay. (item no 270469565481) thats about all i no to be honest, any thing else u wanna no just ask ill do my best to find out.
Redexrob is baz the man from ams?
Cheers Doug.

I got a spare engine from a 16,000 mile P reg (think it was) but haven't done the switcheroo yet. If you can help me remove my old engine from my bike, (handy with an angle grinder?) you can have the newer engine for free!! (I paid for it, but hey, it's been sat awhile). I want my kick ass original engine back up and running.
I'm aiming at 10th November to get on with this, I have a few days off work. Lol. (that's November 2006...)
and Bournemouth isn't too far from the island either, Doug.

AMS are another 'company', and run by a guy called Brian if memory serves me. Baz has his own little set-up and is specialzedzxr on ebay. Id always reccomend him purely because ive had parts from him and they have been 100%, ive also spoken to him and is really chatty and helpful. With most engines baz sells, i think he sells them with new head gaskets, cam chain, blades and clearances done at an extra price. Not sure what AMS can offer you but i suspect both can offer you running engines with varying mileages and prices.
Best thing is to call and see what he's got and see what he can offer you

I second this.
When my chain lost its link and wrapped round the front sprocket it damaged 2nd gear and the head gasket blew not long before this, I don't trust breakers and had previously seen Baz advertising refreshed engines on ebay so gave it a punt, chatted to him over the phone a couple times, rode all the way to him in Leeds.
One of the best decisions I've made I must say, not only did I get a whole refreshed engine for less than you'd pay for a likely basket case from a breakers, you see the man at work and assist him where needed......... So you know what's been done and that it's done right!!

He can go to you for an additional fee too.........
