Hi,

I made this template to help me note down the clearences (when and if I do them) Just thought I'd share the template with you all as it may come in handy. Let me know if it's any use.

Simply save the image and print it. I made it for A4 paper so should come out perfect when you print it.

Thats quite good I always end up just drawing one out by hand each time I need to measure clearances...................can I make a couple of suggestions...............

Add the words "camchain here" on the side where the camchain goes just gives an extra reference point so you know where you are. Also the actual clearances could be on there in inches as well for us old guys who still work in thous....................

And a top tip from me.....................

Get your self a little 16 compartment box from a tool shop/hobbyshop or maybe even your local pound shop or possibly B&Q might do them. You can keep each shim and bucket in it's own compartment in the box that equats to the valve postion it came from in the head. If your removing the valve it's self as well it can go in the box too along with the collets. helps get the same valve and other parts back in the same place. I have one and it's marked like yous sheet exhaust and inlet works a treat

I would also suggest putting the line in the middle of the circles so you can put clearance at the top with shim size below

Dont know if anyone wants to have a play with this. Its my spreadsheet for doing all the working out

type in the measured gap at the top, and the current shim size and it works out the replacement size.

The given replacement size isnt in 0.5 increments, so you need to put in the actual replacement size being the nearest 0.5mm increment, that then works out your new gap, that allows you to try the nearest values and get the gap you want without having to work it all out again on the calculator, just type it in.

I did try to add the file itself but .xlr extensions arent allowed, so ive shown the formulas that you need to write in the spreadsheet, about 10 mins work

Bet you can't do that formula for measuring in inches and calculating the right shim in metric then recaluate the new gap ?

I use the converter APP on my phone

I've not ever found a set of metric feeler guages that are suitable to do valve clearances................anyone want to prove me wrong ???

Eh ! That's all I've ever used - pray tell your problem ?

I've never done them in Victorian imperial measurement - always thought that was for Triumphs

All the metric feeler guages I've ever seen have blades like this

SIZES FROM: 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, TO 1.0mm.


Clearly they would be useless to measure the gaps for a ZXR which are 0.12mm - 0.17mm and 0.16mm - 0.21mm

Show me a set of metric ones with a 0.12 blade and a 0.17 blade and maybe I'll buy them but for now my imperial ones do just fine

I do have a 0.1 and a 0.02 in my set to get 0.12, plus a 0.15 too so get the 0.17 aswell

What he said , might even have a .03 in my set - certainly can make up any number with them.

I've never seen a metric set that has 0.03 or 0.02....but then i've not looked too hard.

My imperial set runs from 1 to 20 thou......................and theres a .0015 so that it can be used with any other one give 0.0005

It's not a problem cos I know the clearances in imperial and shims come in 0.002 increments...............off the top of my head
