hi everyone im new to the site having just brought a zxr 400 h1 sp
i understand that these are quite rare now, and am certain it is definatley a sp version it has the flat sided carbs adj suspension, green spring, also the seller has checked frame and chassis numbers with there local kwaker dealer who confirm it is a sp although no paper work to prove,
my main worry is that i am going to pay over the top for it, having never seen one in the flesh i was easily drawn to the retro styling, and raerity of the bike
it is in very good standard condition, years ticket, with only minor marks to fairing,
does anyone have any idea what it would be worth having traweled the internet to find another for sale and being unsucessful i just want to check with people who know more about these bikes than me,
before i hand over the cash
any hlep would be great
cheers stuart

Couple of things:
J1 did not come with flatslide carbs but modified CVKs
J1 did not come with fully adjustable suspension
however, the J2 did
If its a converted J1 it will have a swingarm with upper bracing on it and the solo seat cowl will have a Blue number board with "Sports Production" decal.
If its a J2 wrongly advertised the swingarm will look like the L models and the number board will be Black and side cowls will have big " SP " decals on them in a reflective tape.
Prices are difficult - half the board will tell you 800 quid ! The other half pay what your comfortable with - thats what I do. Weigh up condition , milage , desireability & rarity with the price tag.
A good bike is always a good bike , I got my crashed bike cheap but spent nearly double getting it to where it is now - if I could have found one in same condition as it is now for the money I paid with out doing all the work and waiting till I had all the parts I would have paid it cause I still get the same enjoyment out of it but would have been doing it a year earlier !

i used the link on here and put in the frame number after getting it translated and it comes up as a j1,
now i havent seen the carbs myself only going by what the chap told me, the forks were adjustable on the top, there are no decals but ive browsed the internet and see a few sp's that dont have the decals?
i am going to try and phone kwaker today,
blimey 800 this is up for 2400 im begining to wonder wether i should part with the cash

Fully adjustable forks have an adjuster at the bottom too for rising rate, up top you get preload & dampening, rear shock has the same - these were only fitted on J2 & M models.
It could still be a J1 but has had J2 parts put on it
If they dont have decals then they have been removed or crash repaired no two ways about it.
You wouldn't have much change out of 2.5K here for a very good clean example so dont let that price scare you.
There is a thread here I done showing the two colour schemes for the J1 & J2 the way they came from the factory, if I can find on my hard drive I will attach here otherwise hunt in model ID section.
If you go armed with knowledge and proves not to be as is then you have haggle power but you might be actually be buying a J2 - no bad thing

Wish I had bought this J2 , a little under 2,700 GBPs

Hope you can see the differences I have been on about and know what to look for when viewing - make a check list and take it with you.
NB: Both the J1 & J2 engines do not have ZXR on the generator cover (Left side showing through side cowl) if it has its been either swapped (possible crash damage) or engine changed.
Let us know how it goes,

Found this J1 in a shop for sale:
8701535B3010020700101.jpg
2,639 GBP with 3,956 Miles on the clock
Here's a J2 that has had the engined overhauled:
8200021B3008111600300.jpg
4,886 GBP with 8,875 Miles on the clock
There are plenty bigger bikes you can buy for the money but they aint a ZXR400

Certainly not Original condition as thats a respray.
Missing graphic on front cowl where the Pearl White extends. Is it Pearl White or solid White ?
Green Hugger is same strength and colour as bodywork so was sprayed at same time , wheels are also extremely bright and have that sprayed at same time look. If Spring looks just as Green its been sprayed too - Kit Spring is a duller Green than Kwak Lime Green.
Black blocking on swingarm is not standard
Black Gen' cover is not original condition - should be Grey and clutch cover looks to be painted too.
Polished frame with black block in too.
So all in all a renovated J1 the only way you can confirm the engine is one is by taking the rocker cover off and seeing adjustable cams , it does have a close ratio box but thats a strip down job ! CDI is same with H1 so thats no help either.
If fitted with FCRs these have been added as are not standard.
If it had been an original condition bike then I can see that price from a dealer - if you can get that it has adjustable cams in writing and it being a renovation then 1,800 from a dealer.
But ultimately your call - my bike is a renovation and I would sure want over 2k for it !

just an update on my progress yes the alternator has been painted due to scratch and the front fairing was painting by garage as they repaired a crack,
the black squares on the frame and swinging arm are crappy carbon fiber stickers which will be coming off straight away, the white paint is pearl effect
the photos do not give a true representation the wheels look fairly original or painted a very long time ago as they have the standard chips,
i have phoned kawasaki uk and they have said from the frame / chassis number that it does appear to be an J1 SP
so im guessing thats all i can go on, thankyou very much for all your help though it is much appriciated

I think the lesson here as I've said in the past buyer beware.............zxr 400s have been around for a long time and lots of parts are interchangeable.............there are sellers who will tell lies and there are sellers who just dont know what they are selling.
And sadly lots of naive buyers with a little knowledge and not enough common sense.
A 16 tooth front sprocket might indicate a SP close ratio gearbox.................or a very clever and devious seller

hi there just an update i have checked with both my local kawasaki dealer and kawasaki uk, i gave them both the engine number and frame number
from there limited records obviously because it is an import, they can confirm that both engine number and frame number corralate to the bike and it does indicated that it is indeed a J1 SP, which i am obviously quite chuffed about

,
the stupid carbon stickers on the frame have been removed today reveling the original kawasaki ebox frame sticker,
next job on the list is to count the teeth , but so far its looking pretty good,
thanks for all your help
