hi any1 know the score if you get pulled on a restricted licence?do the plod check the bike at the side of the road to make sure you have a 33hp kit fitted or do you just have to produce proof of kit,not that i ride around without 1 honestly!!!just wondering

police are too thick to know the laws mate. i rode like atwat for 2yrs on a restricted licesne on a full power bike and never got done

You have to produce your certificate of bike restriction, most garages will give you a certificate without fitting the kit, so you should be alright. Only time I think you'll be screwed is if you are clocked at a very high speed.

In the Netherlands you have to have it oficially fitted and changed on your bike's papers wich costs about 500 euro's. Have to love this country

police would know its not restricted for sure if your doing well over 100mph
but you would get fooked if you got caught doing that speed anyway?

but if you got stopped for anything else as long as you have paperwork theres no problem

im probably being incredably stupid here.. is it worth doing? im used to riding a crf450 motocross bike, so not sure the power will be TOO daunting anyway. but then it is there for a reason...

most people get the restrictors put in so they get a certificate then take em out thereselves, others don't even bother and just tell the ins co its restricted, no-ones gonna check unless you have an accident and it gets nasty, then the inspectors will come looking at your bike.

1) There is no obligation (in the UK) to have a certificate or buy an approved kit. Your bike just has to make no more than 33bhp. How you achieve that is up to you. The certificate of restriction isn't worth the paper it's written on, but FI International and garages everywhere are making a huge amount of money out of the fact people think they are.

2) If you give the police reason to think your bike is making more than 33bhp (like overtaking a plod car at 120mph), they have to prove it - they will probably do this by taking it away and examining it for evidence of restriction - carb washers, throttle stop, etc. Having a certificate of restriction might satisfy a policeman who is just curious (if you haven't done anything illegal) but then so might a dyno print.

3) If you have a restricted licence and a full power bike, then you can be prosecuted for driving "other than in accordance with your licence". You will also void your insurance policy because that is conditional on having a valid licence. Basically if caught you are up sh1t creek.

4) A 33bhp bike will still piss on anything on four wheels away from the lights.


You make your own guess as to how likely you are to get caught.

@Baz: can we have a sticky "33bhp Restriction 101" thread somewhere (know your stuff?) because we seem to keep answering these questions every month or so.
