prob normal
i can't be bothered to work it out now I'm afraid but given the bike is theoretically geared for over 140 it is quite possible that at 130mph it is generating at least as much torque in 5th as in top, so when you change gear you don't get any benefit - neither gear is producing enough torque to overcome the wind resistance.
It's a good argument for downgearing your bike. mine runs out of revs at about 125-130 now but at least the engine can get it there, and get it there quickly. I never got past about 110 on standard gearing cos it took so long to wind up!

Well i only weigh 10 stone so nothing major to carry, the road itself wasnt that long, its a main road that comes off the motorway, and the slip road off the motoway onto this road is a nice sweeping curve, so just pinned it from the motorway down the slip road and hung on. Was side by side my mate on his Bandit 1200, just just creeping past him.

lucky you.
actually I generally am too. However after being out at a gig until 1am and then up at 5 to drive to the airport I'm feeling slightly out of it!
I suppose since it's gone eight now I ought to actually do some work rather than just abuse the office internet connection!

well i cant see mine getting to 145 no way not even if i was 10 stone, im 12 now thoe but you have done the engine on yours ain you so thats probly why its good for 145 plus weight etc.. my mates gixer 600 went up to 172mph an he said the book said it only done 160 so that was a bonus for him.
Oh you know the bigger the bike do you save more on fuel cost cos the ZX of mine only does 100 miles for a tenner which aint bad but still.

Engine is completely standard on mine, apart from the beet titanium system and the scorpion can i had on it at the time, but even my first ZXR which was totally standard pulled 145. Chavyboy who used to frequent here, we went out one day and he saw 150 while mine said 145 burried on the limiter side by side. Speedo's arent very acurate at all over 80mph so 172mph could be very optimistic. I doubt my ZXR was even doing 145, more like 135. Indicated speeds and actual speeds are two very different things.
It could be that your engine isnt as tip top as you think perhaps? I know my first ZXR was, it went 6K miles without a service and the valves didnt need doing at all, the guy at the garage said 'it's obviously a sweet engine'.

there's a lot of factors to consider when obtaining top speeds, the zxr400 official claimed top speed is 137mph but it depends on the bike setup, the weight of the rider, wind resistance, uphill, downhill or flats etc etc
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.
