the massive 30 mm nut that holds the clutch basket on. is it a clockwise or antin clockwise thread?

its a normal thread, but you will nead an impact driver to remove it.

Not always Baz, some nuts counter rotate to go on a thread as they may come loose, especially on rotating parts such as clutches.
