tbh id check what sort of discount your going to get from your insurance before you invest as 9/10 your going to be paying a toad load more for the alarm that the discount you get

when i first got my ZXR, i insured it with carol nash. They offered me a discounted rate on getting an alarm fitted, but it would only bring my premium down by about £10 a month as the bike was garaged.

so.... it would have taken me 30 years to pay for the alarm in insurance savings.... er... no thanks!
(£300 alarm, and a discount of £10 a year on my insurance)

IME insurance companies seem to give a big discount for garaging the bike, but no real significant discount for additional security.

the alarm made no difference to my gixer insurance - but at £175 fully comp with my partner as a named rider, Im not complaining :-)

In answer to your question - CAT1 alarms/imobiliser will give the biggest discount, and a CAT2 will give the next biggest discount.
An alarm that is not CAT 1 or CAT2 approved is unlikely to give any discount. For example, my other half used to have a BMW R1200GS, he had the factory alarm fitted but because it was not CAT1 or CAT2 approved, he didnt get any discount on his insurance. You are looking at about £300 for a CAT 1 alarm to be installed, and if you have your bike garaged, the chances are the savings it makes on your insurance will never pay for the alarm.

On the flip side of that, certain insurance companies will not insure some bikes UNLESS you have an alarm fitted (my friend in london had to get an alarm fitted to his hayabusa to get insurance), and having alarm fitted can give you peace of mind.

thanks for the replys, but what i actually wanted was some make and models of alarms so i can do online insurance quotes to see if they bring down the premiums to see if its worth it.

I know cat 1 are the better ones and cat 2 etc etc but just gathering the make and models of your alarms and imobs etc to see what the difference is in quotes to justify buying one thats all

cheers

if you do an online quote then they should give you a massive list of alarms/security to choose from then just look around the net for prices.you can always save the quote and amend later.
