well i payed over the odds on mine, but that was because middle of summer and too keen
i payed £1350 for
ZXR400 L4 (M reg 1995)
36060 miles
12 months MOT
9 months TAX
Micron system (stainless steel)
its clean with a couple of scrapes on either side, obviously had new fairings on it but they all meet up
it doesnt jump out of gear, it revs freely and pulls well, it has new forks on the front, new chain and sprockets,
new oil and filter.
you could probably pick up the same bike today for about a grand if not less. It's in good nick for the milage, i know its got new fairings on it etc but other than that its all clean as explained. DO NOT let the fact that its had a minor service swing it for u, the parts cost £30 for oil, filter and coolant. If its had pads, cam-chain tensioner, camchain, headgasket or new sprockets then maybe offer £100 more than u were, but its all relivant, if u fancy servicing urself then the cam chain costs less than £30, tensioners come in at about £70 so you could buy a dog for £500 and make it perfectly fine for £300, and get a £1200 bike for £800. but its worth taking into account condition over milage.
a well maintained 40000 mile bike will be a better bet than a badly/non-maintained 20000 mile bike.

cheers, turns out its only had rear sprocket and chain.. the front was shagged.
cheers about the "good deal", i've stripped her down and doing all the engine work whilst its in bits. but i cant see where the carb heaters plumb in, im guessing one down by the water pump, but the other i cant see.
