there are 2 main types of bike test, Resticted and Direct Access.
Restricted can be taken any time after your 17th birthday on a bike up to 125cc or 33bhp and allows you to ride a bike up to 125cc, or resticted to 33bhp. The restriction lasts for 2 years, but if youreach your 21st birthday before the restriction lifts you can take an Accelerated Acces test which is pretty much the same as the Direct Access test.
Direct Acces test can be taken any time after your 21st birthday on a bike capable of 70mph and 500cc or over. This test allows you to ride any bike.
Before either test you must also take your motorcycle theory test (different to the car one) and a CBT.
Hope this helps

yeah cheers id always wondered when i heard ppl talkin of it, we just hav one test and if you pass your restricted to 50 mph for 1 year and have to have 'R' plates displayed which stand for restricted.
Can ride any bike you want so if i passed my test the minute after i cud b on an R1 if i cud get iunsured for it that is lol its the same for car with the 'R' plates.

you guys have some strange rules over there... lol
oh, yeah, the 2 tests over here are exactly the same except for the biek you take it on.
do they make you restict the bike or it it just if you get caught goin over 50 with the R plates on? can see people not putting the plates on in the first place...

thats y i love it here mate.
They dnt make ya restrict the bike physicaly just put the plates on and tell u to not go above 50!! if ya get caught doin over 50 then its £1000 fine and an extra 3 months on 'R's.
I've put an 'R' plate on the front but aint got round to the bk yet cos need t fit it to number plate. I got 100 tday on a big straight road and ther were other cars about but no1 cares other thn the police and if sum1 reports ya the police cnt do n e thin cos its jus an estimated speed from member of the public so unles you over take a police car then youll b gd !!
Quite alot of ppl dnt bother with them at all, unless ya get pulled over no1s gna no but not worth 1000 quid i dnt rekon, im aleady in the red!
No speed limits tho so spose its worth being sensilbe for a year so when they run out ya can legally over take a police car at 150 as long as its safe(ish).

iirc over there you have the 30 limits for the villages ect then national speed limit is anything you want as long as your doing it safely.

yeah its the same as the UK where there are 30's in built up areas then 40s when your a bit furtehr out thn the odd 50 here and there but when there is a national speed limit it means there is no upper limit as long as your safe. ITS GREAT

This guy's from the Isle of Man though. You're right, it's 70mph for dual's and 60mph for singles here in the UK.
