Knee out, no Action

Hi,

I've been waiting for a nice hot sticky day to put the bike to the test after owning it since October, and damn!!!! I must say the handling on these things are truley jaw dropingly amazing! I managed to stick me knee out both sides going round bends at almost 80mph and the bike just keeps on going!I had my butt off the seat, my head round the screen, my knee stuck out but no grinding noises. Obviously I need to get a bit lower but round my area there are just too many crap bends. Now I'm kinda new to all this knee sticking out buissness but I think I'm getting the hang of it, also does anyone know any really really good bends in the Hertfordshire area?

Is there any advice people can give me so I can make my bro jealous? :P and no I'm not taking an angle grinder to my knees lol.

Regards

Rich

I found it easier to sit back a bit on the seat and get half a cheek off.

trying too hard it sounds like, try going knee down somewhere slower first. an 80mph corner on the road really isnt the best time to be stretching out your knees hanging off uncomfortably and generally focusing more on your lean angle than you are the road.

If it's like my area and there are no handy roundabouts to have a play on find a carpark thats pretty empty and no traffic and just go round in circles and get comfortable with your body position and lean angle. Jamz has said many times that knee downs dont require you to be going fast and it's true. The added bonus is in a carpark you can do both sliders :smt002

Also bear in mind the roads i ride in my area are all very poorly surfaced b-roads and it's rare my knee will ever hit the floor anywhere other than a carpark. i even have a big habit of not even sticking my knees out when i hang off and instead push it right into the tank because i tend to ride mostly in jeans.

Be comfortable and dont try too hard, just enjoy the ride :)
it'll come in time anyway.

basically, what Xphy said - 80mph is not the speed to be trying knee down on the road for the first time.

In fact having got my knee down at about that speed on the track, I'd go so far as to say that if you are carrying enough speed and lean angle on the road to GYKD, you're a fucking idiot. I'm guessing the reason you couldn't do it is because you're not.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice guys, I had to go as far as St,Albans to practice. The thing is around Hertfordshire there are just so many shabby roads full of pot holes, man hole covers and gravel (ask zxaaaaargh). I found this lovely S bend towards St,Albans but only problem was I had to go pretty fast to get the angle. There is a huge car park in comets but there's lamp posts bollards and islands everywere. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying :smt017

Round here there's no decent round abouts or even if there is, they're full of pot holes and man hole covers, I mean what a stupid place to put a man hole cover slap bang in the middle of the road on a round about? There's this 1 round about at the end of my road with about 4 or 5 slippy man hole covers skattered so you can't dodge them. Not making excuses, it's just how it is in Hertfordshire :smt010

Rich

Have you tried one of these:

Seriously, though - I'm not built like Rueben Xaus, and on the ZXR400 I could get my knee and footpegs down on the right corner without even sticking my leg out! You're just not leaning it enough, and your body positioning is also terrible. Don't rush it - just get confidence in your bike and tyres and relax and it will happen.

As others have said - your speed won't help you getting your knee down, but it will help with how long you spend in A&E after you drop it. :smt018

you only really need enough room to be able to ride around in a circle without any crap on the floor, you can knee down in a little more room than it would take you to pull a u-turn. so if you cant quite find the room in that carpark just keep your eye out for something in the area.

Hey there are a few roundabouts that I get my knee down on.

Theres a nice double roundabout near Leavesden Studios, Airfield way http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|w ... %20WD5%200.

Theres a nice big one http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|w ... 20WD18%200 on a route I go on however there is a little gravel on the outside so you have to stay tight to the roundabout. You'll prob see me going round them all the time.

Also there is the Maple Cross roundabout which i learnt to get my knee down on!

Just trust your tyres. Its a fact that you'll never have it cranked over as far as you think you do. Its mostely a mind game. Just hang off like a monkey.
