Hey guys and gals new to the forum so hi to all

Might be buying a L1 model zxr400 but found this link and was slightly confused as it says the L1 is a five speed gearbox and all the others are six speed

http://cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki_ZXR ... 5_ZX400-L5

I am guessing this is a mistake on the website but i'm not sure. I've never had anything to do with zxrs before

Thanks

does the zxr 400 have a monster 1st gear? aside from motocross bikes, all i have ever been on is my friends r1(scary stuff) and the gearing was mad. i barely used 2nd or 3rd, didnt really need to as i chickened out from the power, and 1st gear lasted forever.

1st gear will vary from bike to bike, but in the case of the ZXR400, the SP model has a taller first gear than a standard model.

Thing is riding round in first gear isnt going to do much for your fuel economy, and road riding is diiferent to track riding.

h's apparently have shorter first gear than l's. you could check pretty quick in the manual if you could be bothered.

An L on standard gearing will just about do 60 before hitting the limiter in 1st. but equally it will just about pull 6th from 40 or so.

I recently borrowed my mates R1 (full 'review' in my rant section on this site :smt003 ), and it does 107mph in 1st gear! shocking

Image

Most other sportsbikes I've had have been 60-80mph in 1st, so it was a massive system shock. Actually I think the weirdest part was blipping the throttle down through the box using engine breaking, because where on most other bikes changing down to first would slow me to around 40mph, on the R1 I was still doing over twice that!

Quite a contrast to the XT660 I'm on at the moment which does about 20mph in 1st lol! :smt003

you should watch out stackin down the gears to slow you cos sometimes it locks up into a huge skid. iv done that afew times lol.

That's why you should blip the throttle to match the revs on the downshift! :smt002

Plus it makes a lovely WHOM-WHOM-WHOM-WHOM noise, and everybody thinks you're much better than you might be! :smt003

ah i see. does it make that much of a difference then. althoe it probly would if you use the gears to slow alot.

on the ZXR, no difference that anyone's ever reported, certainly not without modifying it slightly.

on the recent R1 which prompted the discussion, probably yes.

so is it good on those two bikes just because of the amount of torque then.?.
