Fork preload adjustment?

Hi All,
Just bought an H model zxr400 (H1 I think). Went to adjust the preload tonight on the forks, but the tops of my forks don't match the manual...they have a black cover on the top and look the same as this pic:
http://www.zxrworld.co.uk/zxr400/workshop/Forks/7.JPG (apologies for the pilfering)
Can anyone advise which bit I need to turn to adjust the preload please? I don't want to turn the wrong thing and mess the settings up.
Cheers.
Rach.

Yup the bike's definitely an H1 - problem is the instructions in the service manual I've got don't have the plastic bit on top, so the instructions regarding how to adjust the preload are a bit confusing. Do I just take the cap off the top and it will look as the picture, or am I missing something?
Reason for adjusting is that my forks are set too far hard for my weight.
Cheers.
Rach.

the manual shows the H2 forks, which look more similar to the L models.
On the H1 forks, you adjust the preload by turning the nut with the hole in the side, see it? there is two nuts, the bottom one screws the fork together, and the one that sits on top of that, with the hole in, is you preload adjustment.
I use a spanner rather than jam some thing in the hole!
