Speedway Training Saved My Life?

I was just pressing on a bit on a blast (not thraping it but not going slowly), went around the outside of a slow car as we both exited an island, and just as I was alongside the back end went all over the shop - to the left, right, left and right again!

It must have looked very impressive to the car driver. :wanker *AHEM*

Anyway, I pulled over to check I hadn't got a puncture and there wasn't anything nasty and slippery all over my tyre, and all seems ok - so I guess it was just 'something slippy'.

When it first let go it was pretty close to highsiding, and so I'm putting this one down to experience gained from the days practise I had on a speedway bike on shale.

You can never have too much experience, so I'd say if you've never been on anything but tarmac it's well worth the money to have a crack at speedway or something similar.

And is it just me whose heart rate hardly seems to even rise in incidents like this that should have been a major brown-stained drama? :smt017

That does sound like a proper brown moment!
I see you're point too. If you're used to loose surface riding then it wont come as much of a shock if it happens on the road.

As for the calmness. I find that it's when I'm off the bike I toad myself. The amount of times I've had a 'moment' and just carried on without a care. Then a few hours or days later, it'll hit me and I'll feel very stupid/lucky.
Trouble is, as soon as you're suited up and pulling away, it's all forgotten.

Like you say, experience helps, just make sure you last long enough to gain it.

I had a brief brown moment yesterday, read a corner wrong and it was tighter than i thought. I did the worst possible thing and got target fixation on where i thought i was going to end up, right near the edge of the road. Got on some mud, front locked up, let go, tyre started turning again on the gas, wiggle wiggle back to tarmac! About the closest ive come to binning it in about 4 or 5 years. That was a really scary moment for me, purely because it caught me by complete surprise more than anything. Usually if i get a bit of slide on the road it doesnt bother me, i just think about how cool it might have looked and think myself lucky!

I also find the older im getting the less surprised i am about things, and id say its more to do with experience of anticipating things before they happen.

Yeah, when you anticipate evreything, there's less to shock / surprise you.

But it does mean you get that thought of "Audi, I see YOU, but I don't think you see ME - if you do what I think you're gonna do, my carbon knucles will take off that wing mirror / go through your window."

The only surprise being how flimsy the drivers window of an Audi A4 really is.

biggrin
