if i was gonna just do trackdays, for the best priced capable machine i would go for an early r6 or gsxr6 or a b1h or something.
there suspension will be still useable ish, a standard zxr will will be shouting at you to spend spend spend on suspension before lap 2.
1500 will get you a good trackday 600

thing is when i was at cadwell park i was looking at the bikes and there where old fzr400s and old vfr800s and the old steal frame cbr6s and the tyres where scrubbed in with blobs of rubber hanging of the sides they where just real track hacks. thats what i want dont get me wrong there where some really trick bikes but it looked like you could have just as much fun on an old bike i have no track experience what so ever and think it would be a long time till iam pushing a standard zxr400s capabilities

Having just started doing trackdays this year I can give a breakdown on what it has cost me so far!
Bike bought in January for £800. (Ex number 2 bike of a racer)
Trailer & Towbar - Now upto about £450, Me and my dad bought a trailer for £130 from Ebay and have boxed it ourselves, looks fairly respectable now and carries all our kit.
First trackday £65 - lasted two sessions before we left to go home as the front brake discs were badly warped.
Front brake discs £380 & Pads £36 - I got EBC Pro-Lites, cheaper discs can be picked up for £100 a peice.
Tidied up the paintwork and plastics on the bike a bit on the bike £60
Second trackday £105 - Would have done the full day, Tyres now appropriately shredded and a blown fork seal.
Tyres £230 - Fork Seal and labour £60-£80.
So £2206 so far this year.
The best thing about trackday riding though is you can do as little/much as you like at a time. you book when you want too. I'd like to think my bike is fairly sorted now and I'm hoping to do a race later on this year. so really after initial setup you just need to look at tyres and the occasional bit going wrong. Oh, and dont throw it in the gravel either!

My ZXR loved the track. Brakes faded horrendously by the end and she was running hotter than the sun, but she went round 8 sessions fine.
Only cost was for oil, filter, rear tyre.
Finished off that tyre on the road!
You really can be quite ham-fisted with the throttle though. Might get boring on bigger tracks... Oh bullocks will it! It's so much fun!
