Cheap run around ?

Considering recent issues with my bike, and a potentially longer commute i am considering getting a cheap run around - i have a car already (skoda fabia - big pimpin) but the girlfriend uses this to drive to leamington at the mo.
was wondering what people would recommend - it would really just be for when it was icey / really bad rain, instead of using the bike - thought of a mini at first as would be easy to get spares / maintian, but they go for a fair whack on ebay.
other tihng was a kit car that ran off a bike engine ? as figured wuld be cheap to tax / mot / petrol etc... but not sure who makes them ? i have seen a couple floating about, one that looked kind of like an egg for two people - with two wheels at the front and one off the back !!!

I don't think any of the kit cars that use bike engines would be ideal to try and run on snow and ice!
If you're looking for a Winter car then you want skinny tyres and 4wd... maybe an old Panda 4x4 1.0?
Or any older Jap FWD car for the reliability...

little as possible really, like i said we have a decent enough car for distance driving etc... likely will only need it when its raining / icey, so just want something real chaep, as its not going to get used much, maybe once a week, but i need it there incase the weather is too bad to go on the bike, im talking a 25minute commute you see

My sisters ex reckoned driving her 4X4 Panda was more fun than his Impreza!
Reading that back I'm hoping that wasn't just sexual slang.

my mother ran a Ford Ka to 125k miles before i wrote it off, whoops, it was a young lass who pulled out on me
Seen them for sale from £500, lots of them about for parts, quick enough and will do 115mph, handles like a go kart. Ace. The looks aren't to everyones taste but its cheap and reliable. Only rust kills them.
I used to have a fabia TDI, best car i've ever driven in the bad weather. Put your gert on the bus.

Haha, Pandas! My Dad had a 4x4 Panda. Once, my Mum's Volvo dropped a valve at the bottom of our road, and it was a very steep road. The tow truck couldn't pull it up, so my Dad's little Panda did it!
4x4 FTW! Hoo hoo hoo!
Mind you, I think he had the 'monster' 1.3 version...
or... brace yourself...
A Metro!

I had one of these and wrecked all 4 tyres within 1 week of each other - I swear the tyre wall was the only suspension on the car!
It's a go-kart with 4 gears and a toad engine. You could break into it by
pulling the door and it would bend open wide enough for you to reach in and unlock it...
Yeah, my money's on a Fiat Panda. Just don't expect it to be any warmer than being on the bike!

lol some interesting recommendations there, i would go for an old pug 106 diesel or an old ford fiesta, these should be cheap to insure and are reliable as long as you dont thrash them, the old mk2 golfs are contenders too. failing that just buy yourself a side car for the bike and that should see you right in the winter conditions.
