Pretty sure the reason for my hot starting prob is because of poor voltage to the coils...the wires get very hot and pliable....too much resistance me thinks!

I would not use a relay due to vibration issues with the contacts. Just upgrade your wire diameter slightly and minimize connections. Remember to include a fuse !!!.
