Stepping up to a ZX7r....possibly...opinions

Literally am in love with the ZX7r, looks freekin sweet, one went past me today and I nearly crashed my car cos was staring!!

Thinking of getting one in March when I'm 21 and my 2yr restriction is up, as insurance for it was surprisingly low!

Definitely keeping the ZXR400 though as its awesome :smt003 But am looking into getting something (phyiscally) bigger for longer journeys to uni etc- i.e something where my knees arent in my chin when im cruising on the motorway!

Could I cope with the step up to a 750 or would it be better to get a 600, something like a ZZR600 ZX6 or thundercat...? :smt006

You can cope wth anything.
If it's what you want to spend your hard earned cash on , get the 7R.

Personally, I think it's too heavy for me to pick up when I drop it, so I went for a modern 636. But I did wait till I was 25 so insurance wasn't an issue.

I used to have one, and id get another in a heartbeat! They are absolutely fantastic bikes to ride, was a little uncomfortable for me but that was on long motorway rides, otherwise down country roads when your moving about its fine. I did drop mine twice at a stand still (working nights and very tired), and they are heavy to pick up. Never needed anyones help tho as there is a bit of a technique to it.

Heres mine and i miss it dearly:

I literally started the same train of thinking yesterday. Fancy the P model as they are awesome looking machines. And yea the insurance is surprsingly cheap!! I WANT ONE NOW!!!!? lol Though unforutunately I wouldn't be able to keep the 400 :(

Good choice! They always get comments because they're still thought of as one of the most beautiful bikes ever made!

To be honest I think a move to a 600 from a 400 is too small a jump, so 750 is the perfect size to teach you about riding a bike with torque and without the intimidation of anything bigger. Plus insurance will be nice and cheap. :smt002

And remember that any bike will only go as fast as your right hand wants it to. Apart from 2-strokes which will try and kill you occasionally however you ride them. confuddled

So you 750 riders, or anyone else for that matter, what sort of things should we be looking out for on these things. I've found one which I am going to take for a ride tomorrow.

Its 1999 with 37,000 on the clock. Great looking fairing, fuel end can (does this mean a full system or is it not like the 400 in that manner i.e. standard being one straight through lump of metal)

Any help appreciated, hope this isn't too much of a thread jack :smt016

Damnit Jamz. I just managed to snort Corn Flakes through my nose reading that.

Myself, I won't make any move that demands I am rid of the 400. Though I suppose I could stand to have a 750 to tide me over while I bought a newer, better condition 4. Dunno about that yet though.

Hi

I had a GPZ600R. Had it for a couple of years. It was back in 1993. I have a lot of xrays from that time as a lady hit me with her Saab. It was not nice at all.

Then I bought a ZXR750 1994. Green ofcourse. I liked it a lot. Kind of heavy in the front. But it was super stable in the twisties. I upgraded to a 98 ZX9R. But I always liked the looks of the ZXR750. And also how it behaved in the turns.

The ZX7R was 1bhp and 5 kilos heavier than my ZXR750. Just as stable/heavy in the front. Power was pretty good. 121bhp I think. I enjoy my ZXR400 now and also has a GSX-R1000 K2 racebike with 165bhp.

ZX7R is not bad bike. The ZXR400 is ofcourse not as quick as the ZX7R. I enjoy the lightness of the ZXR400. If you go for a smaller bike you would have it a bit easier and more like the ZXR400. So that is something to consider.

Regards

End of uni and too many debts, it had to go unfortunately. It was either that or the 400, and since the ZX7 was practically good to go that was the one that went, id have also got more money for the 7 than the 4 too. Id also invested too much in the ZXR to let it go, it meant more to me sentimentally than the 7.

i found it quite a hard leap from the 400-750. The speed was of course mind bending but the weight and size takes some getting used to! Have to learn that you cant just stroke it around the bends and you'll still be fast you now have to take it by the balls and yank it over! Once you get the hang of that your away.

I was riding with a lad on a brand new gixxer1000 last weekend and kept up fine on my 93 zxr750. Well untill i bined it :smt004 ...

I just got a ZXR750 L model with a 950 big bore ZX9 motor in bits. Bit of a basket case , but it will make the ZXR400 less lonely in the stable. Also always wanted to have a 400 and 750 L model at the same time. My 400 is stripped to the bones with a single seat unit so The 750 (950 :excited ) will be much more loved by the wife. cheers

Just bought one 2day. I actually don't find the extra weight much of an issue, its absolutely planted all the way over!!
Only really notice when shifting it round the garage, and the engine is great fun :excited

Just as uncomfortable as the 400 though i have to say!!
