1999 ZXR Carb Removal From Bike

Hi All,

Does anyone have a step by step guide for removal of carbs from the bike?

I've read the guide on the forum for striping and cleaning which was ace!!

Also, is it worthwhile sending off carbs to get professionally cleaned or is it a doable task for a novice? My bike has been laid up with fuel in the carb for 3+ years so I'm expecting it to be badly gummed up - presumably a professional clean will be better than a clean done by myself (I do not have access to any chemicals to soak them in)

my sonnicator when tits up a lear or so ago, and i dont have the £600 to stump up for a new one...however i have a contact on the fzr exup forum who has a large sonnicator in his garage, if you send it to him dissassembled he used to charge £10 to sonnicate the carbs for you.

i can do jets/tubes/needles etc as i have a small one in the garage, but the big one died :(

post the jest/needles/tubes to me with a tenner and ill clean them and send them back to you, of if you are local pop over, im in Nuneaton.

Is there anything wrong with cleaning the carb/ jets with a carb tool and a solvent degreaser spray?

nope, it will clean away most deposits, but not all of them, to really do it properly you clean them, then sonicate them...you will be amazed at the amount of deposits still present in the jets...

I need to replace the 4 small float bowl drain screws - do these need to be a particular material?

I'm going to change the fuel filter too - do you have any recommendations as to makes etc? Also is there a process to follow when changing the fuel filter?

if you dont want to pay kawasaki prices, any stainless steel screw should suffice, though you risk damaging the inside of the float bowl.

as for fuel filters, i generally go for whatever seems a reasonable price on ebay, not the most expensive and not the cheapest...

Think I would rather go for Kawasaki ones.

Where do you get your Kawasaki parts from?

What about air filters? Do you buy middle range ones?

as for air filters, ive got k&n in both my zxr400's, doesnt really do that much though...

I'm intrigued. The float bowl drain screw has a tapered nose which permits fuel out of the bottom nozzle when it is unscrewed. I can't understand how it can "fail". There is nothing to wear out. The taper engages with a small hole and seals on the lip, much like a bleed screw on the calipers.
If you really need them, I have four spare ones...or will you need the float bowls as well?

ive seen broken tapers before where people turn them in too much, also people tend to absolutely muller the screw head with crap tools...

One of the screws was overtightened and has been 'mashed' up when trying to remove

So today I took the main, pilot and needle jet holder out and gave it all a good clean!! (Jets are currently soaking in a carb cleaner) It was horrendously mucky in the float bowls!!

One question I have is - is there a jet to the right of the main jet (couldn't see it covered on the cleaning carb guide)? If it is how do I remove it?

Also I've seen in the manual that their is a starter jet - where is this?

the starter jet is just a tiny hole, its what the choke uses when it draws in fuel...this is probably what you were looking at.

the copper coloured tube on the side of each carb that goes from kind of the float bowl to kind of the choke, thats the fuel line for the starting enrichment/choke circuit as far as i can tell.
