Carb Questions

Hi i've changed the main jets in my carbs back to 95's and the bike runs fine and pulls well from 9k to the redline although anything below it tends to splutter and fart about sort of sounds like its missing. i'm thinking of splitting the carbs right down and rebuilding them but wanted to know if you can get a rebuild kit such as new seals and that? i've also got a leak at the bowl base on one and two carbs and also the fuel tap is leaking a bit. Any help is appreciated thanks Daz

just out of intrest why have you gone back to 95's? what jets did you have before?id be checking for air leaks they are a common problem for poor running especially at lower revs.needle heights can also affect running performance, does yours have adjustable needles in it?if so where is the clip set?are the diaphrams ok?also what are your mixture screws set at?have you balanced the carbs?lots of different factors affect carb running you could keep going all day exhaust/airbox also affect them.how does it start?does it cut out when you put choke on?im not sure what sort of 'rebuild' kits you can buy for carbs but i no you can get all the seperate gaskets and stuff.as for the fuel tap you can get new seals and stuff for them too.ebay is a good place to look for it all. when you take the carbs apart make sure they go back together pristine clean.
let us know how you get on

i put 95's back in as it was running 102's and the bike is std apart from the end can. The plugs were black aswell and the can end is all sooty. I've ballanced the carbs i'll have another check for air leaks. it just seems a bit spluttery at mid range and has cut out on idle a couple of times. I'm gona get these leaks sorted and strip the carbs for a clean and then start from there. Thanks

a good way to check for air leaks is to spray around areas you think are leaking with wd40 or carb cleaner or something similar with the bike running and if the revs change it means theres a leak.carb inlet rubbers are a common problem for leaking so make sure you check them, i had this sort of problem on my bike and i found the air box was 'warped' and not sitting flush onto the carbs so i used some sticky foam stuff to form a sort of gasket to fill the gaps and that made it alot better.
hope this helps

i think your going to have to take the carbs off and make sure they are all clean inside and the floats arent sticking or damaged etc and while your there id measure the float heights and check the diaphrams and needles, the bike will run different with the airbox off anyways as it messes the air fuel ratios up but it certainly shouldnt be pissing fuel from the over flows.

I think the floats were sticking how do i free these? the heights seemed ok just when i tipped them over sometimes they stuck.

ye seems like that could be the problem, i would just take them off and clean them and the needle with carb cleaner or similar that should do it.just while you have the carbs apart there is another screw near the screw that holds the float on its holding like a disc sort of shape in place well underneath there is a little filter it would be worth cleaning this as well as if this is blocked will cause problems.
hope this helps

just out of intrest does yours have adjustable needles?ye i guess thats fine just making sure they move ok you can also press them down gently of course to make sure the 'spring' back up again properly.make sure none of them have holes in.also check the mixutre screws on all the carbs are all the same and not wound out to far etc.

No standard needles and i've already checked the mixture whats the base set up as some say 2 1/2 turns but i think the manual says 1 3/4 or something? i know it ain't gonna be perfect without getting it on the rollers but i want it ridable and not peeing fuel everywhere. The floats spring back up ok when pressed down will take them off and have a bit of a clean. Cheers

Right i've got the carbs stripped down but forgot i ran out of carb cleaner so gona get some tomorrow. I repaired the fuel tap so thats not leaking and also recieved my bowl gaskets from cradley so hopefully i can build them back up tomorrow or thursday and see how things go. Pulled the little filters out below the floats and they seem clean needles and diaphrams look fine anything else i should be looking for? Thanks Daz
