are you sure they/you aren't getting mixed up with the thermostat? you put that in boiling water to see if it works, cos if yours is seized which judging by your old coolant could well be then it may not be opening and letting the coolant flow round the engine which is why its getting too hot.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Just filled her up with water, and let her run to temp.

The fan kick in now on half temp, and keep doing so every 20 seconds or so on idle (To stop it getting too hot).

So now it doesn't seem to get too hot, and the fan seems to be keeping it cool.

I also started it with the rad cap off (Somebody said to, to see if the water ripples, or bubbles) - It ripples so apparantly that means no air is getting in anywhere that is shouldn't (eg headgasket?) is that correct?

After I had her running, I popped rad cap and she had taken about 100ml of water - But could this be it just leveling itself off? (I have retopped up and just waiting for her to cool down so I can have a look again)

Cheers for the help guys.

P.S - Where is the thermostat and how easy is it to test? Cheers

OK. The heat issue is sorted :excited

She no longer overheats.

Still pushing coolant into the header tank, and then pushing it out though - would this be just the cap?

Gonna order a new one I think. . . .

Think I may have too.

Just use a normal compression tester, screw into spark plug hole and compare all 4 cylinder pressure? (Have one from when I had my trusty :smt011 2 stroke. lol)
