is there a guide somewhere for doing the valve shims (in the bike) or is it easier to drop the engine and check the timing chain and tesioner at the same time

any help mucho appreciated

i may just drop the engine out looks like a right faff with it in

i need to do the cam chain (i think anyway) so may be easier out of the bike

Its dooable in the frame, just more akward, and if you have to change the cam chain too ,then yes, drop it out.

the reason for doing the cam chain is i dont know if its been changed and as the motor is reading 25k (how accurate ?) i prefer to be safe than sorry

someone has already been inside the engine as i have some hoymalar around the sump gasket and the timing casing was sealed with white silicone

how difficult is the shims?
is there any room for adjustment or is it just change the shims?
anybody with a vast amount of shims prepared to come to my house an do it for me ? for far less than the garage said? lol!

you cant adjust the rockers hence you change the shims

having dropped my engine to do the timing chain and check the shims i personally wouldnt want to check and change them with the engine in the frame

having said that there are a few posts on here with people having done it all with the engine in the frame but it is fiddley as per posts

you should measure the 20 link length of the cam chain, i forget the length but its in the manual. If it exceeds it, then it needs to be changed. But for the sake of 20/25 quid and while you have the engine out you could just change it anyway, i would.

ive now got the new chain and tensioner and dah dah some new shims

looks like ill be a busy boy for a bit

good stuff, how much were your shims?

my bike went to the garage for my valve shims doing, and when they opened the top of the engine (or whateva it is they open)
they found that sum1 had been drilling inside my engine and my cam chaain/timing chain has worn half of summat away and all sorts lol

i tried the place as suggested on here mx something or other but no response from tel message so i went to my local kwak dealer frasers of gloucester and they were £1 a shim cheaper than cradely kwak so about £7 each inc vat

i was supprised the cost of the chain being a kwak part for around £25 was expecting it to be more
