timing
The head gasket went on my l6 zxr a couple of months ago, slowly but surely I've been putting it back together, I've got two questions though, where does the timing blade go because it doesn't seem to say in the manual and is there any way I can check the timing without using the starter motor? Many thanks in advance

Re: timing
why would you use the starter motor to check the timing? just put a spanner on the nut on the plate behind the pickup coil you use to check the timing to turn the engine. by timing blade which part are you referring to? have you also looked in the h model manual thats hosted on here it has alot more photo's the l manual is more of a supplement to it

Re: timing
By timing blade I mean the part at the top right of the L model manual, top end, 4-3

Re: timing
if you mean the small black piece in the square on the page you said then look in the h manual, top end, page 4-9, you can see it in the top of the 4th picture on the page

Re: timing
put it all back together and before you put the pulse generator cover on use a spanner to turn the engine over slowly to make sure that it all turns freely and nothing seems unusual, if it does then you need to find the cause, seen many an engine wrecked after some sort of work as they didn't turn it over by hand and when they used the starter the valves hit pistons.

Re: timing
I've turned it by hand with a spanner, it seems to hit some compression even though it has the spark plugs out, is that normal? Thanks

Re: timing
it will generate some compression with the plugs out and you'll get drag from the valvetrain but it should turn freely by hand without anything hitting or locking up at any point
