Cheers for that!
I'm gonna drop the engine cause I'm in no rush and the bikes coming into my nice warm house anyway
Ive bought an engineers straight edge to check for warp but hopefully it will be a case of just take the head off, clean bits, new gasket and head back on.
Thanks for your help

Re: bike running very hot, head gasket?
I've changed the head gasket but I've still got the same problem.
I went out for a ride and it was wet, temperature gauge was really high and when i pulled over there was steam coming from underneath the tank and from the radiator. I presume this was just water evaporating off everything that was really hot. when i pulled over another time i noticed a lot of the steam was coming from the oil cooler which had water visibly bubbling on it.
Any fresh ideas?

bike running very hot, head gasket?
Hmm tricky one really, was it definitely not just water from the road evaporating? Have this alot with my new CBR in the wet weather! Is it white steam, or grey and smelling of oil? I had a problem with my ZXR where every-time I stopped the engine, plumes of grey smoke came up from behind radiator and under tank. It was solved by a new cam cover gasket, as oil was leaking out and burning on the cylinder head! Just a thought!

Yes I checked the thermostat in hot water.
I think the steam was just the water from the road but the radiator had to be pretty hot to do that as it's never done it before so I do have an overheating problem.
I'm going to check the water pump today maybe

Didn't manage to get round to it, I'll take a look later in the week.
