hi, does anybody know of any gearbox problems the zxr has? mine started to knock loud enough for me to hear at 50 mph with ear plugs in. it worried me cos 5 mins before that i was doin 120 on the motorway on the way back from the bush races yesterday. if it had siezed i would have been eating tarmac at a rate i couldn't have digested.

Check your oil level, might be the big end bearing rather than the gearbox.

oil level is fine. when the bike is at a standstill and running there is no knock, ruling out the engine, i think. also when your moving and clutch it, the knock is still there, ruling out the clutch, i think, so that just leaves the box, unfortunatly. the faster i went the faster the knock was, didn't matter what gear i was in, it was speed related not rev related. i'm thinkin a bearing on the main shaft or somethin. then again, i'm not a mechanic.

Well, where does the noise seem to be coming from? Is the knocking engine speed related or road speed related, or just doing it when it feels like it?
Big end bearings can knock and would probably be audiable all the time. Clutch can make some off rattles and bangs. Gearbox is probably not likely to knock (unless seriously having problems). Chain can cause off noises if badly adjusted / oddly stretched.

damn, should have thought of the chain. would have maybe saved me £4500 on a new 650 bandit today

i'll check the chain tomorrow and if thats all it is then i've got myself a good track bike

its speed related the slower you go the more it can be heard and i can feel it through my left boot. cargo if i'd known you were there i'd have went down to the paddock, i was standing at drumkee cross and went home as your race was about to start, pub called as usual. tight enough course that one.

It's the most energy sapping course I ever raced on absolutely no chance to even draw breath.
Bloody hard work for an old guy like me.
I'll be at Mondello on the 8th july
Then Bishopscourt on 28th july
And finally before the Manx Mid-Antrim on 4th/5th August.
Always yellow bikes and always #96.......... and a white tranny.
I'm sure I have a half decent chain you can have

i'm off work for 2 weeks now. planning on doin some flagging in the back garden but if it rains (most likely) i'll have a good look at it and the zzr 250. get them both goin properly, sell them both and have a look about for a fresher zxr. wouldn't mind a track bike though, reckon they're perfect for that
