following on from MMs valve clearance thread ........
Mori Man wrote: If the exchange rate hadn't freakin collapsed so much i would of been happy to supply shims at cost to make a forum "Stash" . They only cost 704 Yen here which used to be under £3 but that's now £5.42 shocking

So,

Gather names up on who does their own servicing and rather than you all have a box of shims each, make a collective set. At times you'll need to top up the most popular sizes that are used and you'll end up with bundles of another size - can't be avoided!

But over all you should all save on servicing costs. You can make a rule that when you have the stash and after completing servicing you empty a particular size of shim you replace them with two the same size ensuring that when it's passed on there is always a full set of numbers.

From my own measurements it seems 2.90 , 2.95 & 3.00 are the most common so doing a group buy on a bundle of 2.85 & 3.05 might be helpful. In my shim box I already have a collection of 3.15 & 3.10 so expect these to be the growing number in your stash

Just a thought!
anyone interested in having a stash of shims for forum users ? i am happy to collect the shims if everyone wants to send me any unused spare ones?

It's an excellent idea as long as they fit the ZX9R! :smt003

If the '97 ones are the same then I'd expect all the B models from '94 to '98 to fit?

Mine's a '99 C2 so at least the '98 C1 models should fit, and possibly more.

A shim's only a little metal disk, though, so I should imagine a lot of them will be the same at least for Kwak's?

I should have written down the sizes.
The sizes wear off the shim so they need to be measured.
From what I received from Kawasaki there is only 2 numbers on the new shims with the numbers being the last 2
i.e a "295" is marked as "95"

Done some digging so if you have the following bikes it's worth your while joining the collective as they all use the same shim - not a definitive list BTW, just when i was doing other bit's n bob's :smt002

ZRX400
ZXR750
ZZR400
ZZR600
ZX9R
ZX636
ZX6R
ZX7R

If for some reason your looking for smaller shims than normal then

ZXR250

These run from 1.2 ~ 2.4mm

Done a shim check on my ZRX400 today and only two clearances I was happy with the rest all need done - thankfully I have my wee stash from the ZXR motors so only need to buy 5. I do however have a pile of 3.0 and 3.1 so I might just send some over your way :smt002

Can't go wrong with this price for shims, but still sensible to contribute to a stash

http://www.zoomfactory.co.uk/valve-shimming-info.asp

ZXR are 7.48mm in Diameter

Even though it says KXF 250/450 they will work fine on a ZXR then? AFAIK shims were £10 each, and mine are as good as havent been done in the 21000 miles its covered :rant

edit - http://www.zoomfactory.co.uk/products.asp?cat=169 Will the top product be good as well then, as its still 7.48mm? I know I wouldnt need most of the sizes buts more for time cost of replacing them, obviously with them out of the engine I cant use the bike for work so if Ive got some ready in a box to replace after that can do the £3 each thing, or if the stash has the right sizes contribute to that :excited

Yip it's fine that it says KXF they will still fit.

Box if it contains 82 shims works out at 95p each :smt001 But you will be left with so many that will never ever be used I would say keep clear.

Even if all 16 shims needed to be bought your only £48 but more likely than not you'll swap a bundle about and end up only needing to buy say 5 .

@ MOS , Will be buttoning up the SP motor soon and after that i'll send you out a bundle to increase your stash man :smt002

Going by the shims i bought a few weeks back, the prices depended on thier sizes. That box of shims isnt bad value at all, but like you say, there will be sizes you'll never need.
