clutch started slipping in high rpm's

Post by spudboy6 »

Hi guys long time no speak guess my zxr was running batter than ever ! ,

Right lately ive been noticing in high RPM's my clutch is slipping and i always thought it was maybe my rear wheel spinning but i have worked out its certinaly not as its dry and surely its not that powerfull .

Anyways it only does it when warm and 2/3/4 at like 10K onwards and if i change through the gears fast is slips all the way as it wont gain any speed ,

back in August i fitted a full clutch kit ,

EBC racing kevlar plates and steels with springs , new clutch cable ect ,
Oil change - castrol racing 10w-40 fuly syn
K7N oil filter

i did all the above work on 29000 miles and now im on 31152 miles ,

now do you think im due an oil change ?

i pre soaked the plates when i fitted them and had no issues up until now ,

wondering if the castrol oil i used was a bad move being fully synth ?

im probably going to go for fuchs silkolene super 4 ride next time semi - synth still 10w-40 any good or bad move ?

opinions welcome as all clutch components are new so cant see anything else that could cause this as it was fine for 2000 miles and starts playing up !

so

1- reccomend me an oil
2- reccomend an oil filter K&N or kawasaki or other
3- do you aggree i need an oil change or is that a waste of time ?

i welcome you help and experience please !

I would check the clutch spring lengths and plate wear. Ive no experience with kevlar race plates but could be worn already? Fully synthetic oil could also be a reason if the plates arent suited to it.

Yea I'm hoping its down to the fully syn , I've just purchased some motul 5100 semi , so will drain that out over a few days and whilst that's draining I'll have the clutch plates and springs out to see what's happening in there and hope for the best !

why drain the oil ? ? ?

Just check the clutch

I've had oil induced clutch slip once..................it happened after I changed the oil from semi syn to fully syn. The very lovely man I spoke to at the oil company tech department reckon it was prob something in the semi syn oil that didn't like the fully syn oil

Oh and racing Kevlar clutch plates ? ? .............................excellent marketing by EBC...................... utterly useless clutch plates

Mr Kawasakis clutch plates lasted 29000 miles.......................why fit anything else ? ? ?....................ah of course EBC are cheaper will be your answer and my reply ? ?...........they are NOT cheaper if your buying new ones every 2000 miles especially now that the clutch has been slipping and therefore overheating and potentially warping the steel plates.

Did you not do this when you fitted the new clutch in the first place ?

This is not a picture of a ZXR400 lever but the principal is the same.

Use the cable adjusters there's 2 one at the lever and one down at the bottom of the cable...............adjust the cable to leave some free play as indicated in the picture.
Too much free play and you will not be able to lift the clutch when you pull the lever
Too little or no free play could cause the clutch to slip

Set adjuster and locknut on clutch mount to 5mm
Ajuster setting.JPG
Then pull clutch lever to take up the slack and measure the gap between it and main body 2~3mm
Clutch free play.JPG
if it's out of spec' then use the adjuster at the clutch pivot shaft to set

I had the clutch badly slip swapping it from mineral to fully synthetic , new plates and steels and back to mineral oil for me.
