Awful Sound Coming From The Rear

Post by mikeee »

Hi Guys, Im Michael.
I just had my tyres replaced (Bridgestone BT-023's), well 2 days ago, and I've noticed this awful grating sound coming from the rear wheel, or near the wheel, and i can't think for the life of me what it could be, i did think that it could be that when they put the rear wheel back on the torqued the spindle to much and crushed the rear wheel bearings, but that just seems a bit drastic, so my next thought was the cush drive rubbers, thinking that they had worn but then again i don't think it would make the sort of grating sound that it does, plus it didn't do it before i got the tyres changed. so basically i really don't know, and i can best describe it as a grating hmmmming sound. any ideas??
Thanks

Michael

Before you pull the wheel off to check it out...

How tight is the chain? Is the wheel aligned? is it disc rubbing on the pads?

Thanks For the reply, i checked the chain, they tightened it nicely for me, so i don't think its that, and im not quite sure on the pads, what i mean when i say this is that if it were the pads scrapping on the disc, would it not be a more brushing sound? and constant, where as the sound im getting is a intermittent rough grating one every time the wheel rotates i get it.

Look Cargo, i posted just to see if anyone could help, maybe it was a bit of a stupid question to you, but to me it wasnt, quite frankly if you didn't want to help, you didn't have to reply, and i know your an experienced and valued member of this forum, but seriously you seem to just be blunt and rude to the newer, and less experienced on this forum. and yes im one of those less experienced, im 17 and this is my first big bike, and i like to know that if i have a question that it might be answered in a polite manor, is that to much to ask for? no doubt you will delete this post but owell what can i do :/

Believe me I'm more than happy to help you but I cant help someone who either cant or doesn't want to help himself.

Your bike was fine no strange noises
The wheel was removed
a new tyre was fitted
and the wheel was replaced back into the bike
now your bike makes a funny noise

Now how hard is it to figure out that the noise is very likely to have something to do with the removal and subsquent replacement of the wheel

I would say the average 17 year old should be able to realise that and take action to investigate

This is the bit when you have to help yourself

Enjoy

You say the garage 'tightened your chain up nicely for me'. What exactly do you mean by tight? Your chain should not be 'tight' it should have slack in it and if it doesn't when the tight spots run round it will make a bad sound. You will also fubar your gearbox output bearing running it like this. And the chain and sprockets.

My experience of a lot of garages is that they have no idea about correctly tensioning a chain and take all the slack out of it. I only give the imbeciles loose wheels :smt012

Anyway, you should have enough slack in the chain at the tightest spot that you can push the lower run upwards and with moderate pressure it should stop just before touching the rubber cover which goes round the swingarm near the gearbox output sprocket. You will need the bike on the ground while doing this, NOT on a paddock stand, the normal weight must be on the front / rear wheels. Move the bike around to find the tightest spot in the chain - then do this test with it at that position. If it is tighter than this it is too tight and you need to loosen the adjusters / wheel spindle and get some slack in the chain.

A very tight chain will produce horrible grating sounds like you describe.

Got around to taking the wheel off, and it seems that my rear sprocket is bent inwards, dunno how it happened, so i rang the garage and they have offered to fit me a new chain and sprocket set free of charge, as i argued that the sprocket was most definitely not bent before i took it there. :)

Thanks for the help

You need to discover why the sprocket bent........................bending a sprocket is not an easy thing to do.
Like did some magic sprocket bending pixie do it ?

Long shot here............................is the spacer between the sprocket carrier and the wheel still there? and is it the right way round ?

Are the wheel spacers there and the right way round ?

photos would help
