Tire Replacement Please Help

Post by avguanzonjr »

My bike rear tire is standard size 160x60x17, planning to replace it with a wider tire, any suggestions from the following: eg. 170x60x17 (also zx4r standard-as per below pic) or 180x55x17. if i choose 180x55x17 will it be a problem? i am thinking it might be too close or touches the chain. Please help,,Thanks

@RedexRobB thanks, i ommitted 190x50x17 but still i need your opnion to the above question. Image

you can fit a 180 in there, some racers use 6r back wheels and a 180. But they only really do it cos they have probs getting sticky rubber in 160.
Its not going to be nice to ride on a standard rim...im sure it will ruin the profile..maybee a 170( can you get anythin half good in a 170?) if you really need to.

that list you got there must be off an zxr750? did the early ones have a 170? deffo not from the zxr400, 242 kg dry!! :smt003

They must be printing errors! 160 is defo standard and i think thats meant to be 142 dry!

Jake pretty much summed it up mate.

a 160/60 is a standard fitment.

My recommendation would be - do not fit a wider tyre if you want the bike to go round corners. You will mess up the handling.
The bike does not need more rubber in contact with the road therefore there is no need to fit a wider tyre. The wider tyre needs a wider rim and therefore squeezing it on will distort the profile.

pretty much as Caz said...ask yourself, does your bike spin up the rear wheel on the throttle, even in the dry and in a straight line?

If not, a wider tyre is going to do nothing for you. Even if the answer is yes, you would really need to be fitting a wider wheel as well as tyre to get any real increase in contact patch.

It's not as if there aren't good tyres available in a 160/60...

Agree with above, for it to work properly you'll need a wider rim.

However, I do have a just scrubbed Dunlop 209 GP in a 170 and can supply with a scrubbed 120/70 front if you wanted to try it cheaply. Lets say £100 plus £15 p&p.

I used to run on 180's bridgstones.. hated them.. and could not get the bike to drop right well.. though my other half loved it..

I had them changed three weeks ago.. have the michelins pilot road 2 duel compound and they are fantastic.. the bike drops on its own vertually now... my other half hates it.. :smt003 :smt003 :smt005 bike all to myself again
