New rear brake and stuck front pistons

Post by beatboxben »

I need a new rear brake... Totally fecked. Pistons were more stuck than life. Where can I get one and how much?

I also took apart the front calipers and few are the pistons are stuck. Tried grease gun and I just don't think air will get them out. What can I do? :( don't care about the pistons/seals as I'll get new ones!

Hi I have just dismantled some front calipers using the brake piston remover pliers (approx £16.00) that I bought. At first attempt I thought i had got no chance of getting the pistons out with these pliers as all they seemed to do was chew up the metal from the inside of the pistons (Not the actual working part). There is however a bit of a technique needed, I found that after I had split the caliper into two halves I applied the pliers to one of the Pistons making sure it was really tight and then wedged a screw driver under the back of the pliers at an angle whilst at the same time twisting the piston in its housing using the pliers as a sort of fulcrum. because the twisting motion of the pliers followed the shape of the wedged screwdriver it had the affect of drawing the piston out from the caliper. I repeated this on all 8 pistons with success!!

Thanks for this and I actually bought some of those pliers... but unfortunately after ordering realised my pistons were not hollow *doh!* I have kind of got them out, just bought a new ZX6R F1/2/3 rear brake and hoping this will fit!

Though, maybe you could help me out what is better:

New ones -

or original -

Both around the same price, though the stainless supposedly are lighter and easier to remove (with those pliers I bought aha!)

Just wondering what ones you bought in the end??
It's a tricky one isn't it, on one hand you can buy the piston with 2 seals for £20 so £160 for 8 but then I presume you don't get the inner calliper seals or bleed nipples

On the other hand you can get 8 for £110 and buy a seal kit for £50 with all the seals and bleed nipples

This is starting to get pricey now, I want to do an overhaul on the front brakes, after pistons and seals, mc, discs and pads this is gonna cost a small fortune lol.
I want to do it though as I need some new discs so plan to do it all at the same time
Might just stick to pads and discs for the mean time worry about the rest at a later date

The way I got my pistons out was to just stick an m8 bolt in the centre hole of the pistons, tighten it up while pulling and it twists out
