Replacing dot3 with dot4??

Post by Vaughn »

Ok so after some reading around I have learned that you can't mix dot3 and dot4 brake fluid as this can cause the rubbers to perish or cause you other problems

And then if I'm correct here the difference between the 2 is dot4 has a higher boiling point than dot3
Dot5 has an even higher boiling point but is thicker so not recommended for these types of brake system.

So that being said my bike uses dot3 but I would guess that dot4 would be better, what with the higher boiling point and all
So I know from what I've read that I can't just go get a bottle of dot4 and pour it in but if I was to strip down and clean the brakes and fit new calliper/mc seals and things which I was planning on doing at some point anyway
Would it be safe to then refill the reservoir with dot4??

I would guess it's perfectly safe and should make an improvement when braking heavily but thought I would ask for your opinions on the matter
Thanks

Yeah not a bad idea that, handy stuff to have as well
Much more uses than just cleaning brakes.
When I was an apprentice mechanic many moons ago if a car wouldn't start we would spray brake cleaner into the carbs while turning it over, if it started you knew it was a fuel related problem
