Brake discs

I was playing with a set of vernia calipers this morning and realised that my front discs are currently only 3mm thick, so that'll explain the long travel in the brake lever then.

Anyway I'm a bit skint at the moment so need a set of discs but I want cheap ones for now cos I will probably change the whole front set up some time soon to something with six pistons. Does any one know where I can get some cheap NEW disc, because I don't want secongd hand.

that doesn't explain long lever travel at all. The disc wearing has the same effect on lever travel as the pads wearing - ie. non.
The resevoir allows fluid behind the master cylinder piston so that there is more effective fluid in the system, so the pads move closer to the disc anyway.

Well that is what I have always thought, but I have replaced the pads as they were low, and I have bled the system through, it does have braided hoses but I don't know what brand they are. So I am kind of at a loss as to what is causing the long tavel.

have you checked that the pistions are in good condition?

Might be worth giving them a once over with brake cleaner

Yer I think i'll get some new discs then give the whole system a good clean out. Hopefully that'll give it some bite.

Dont forget the master cylinder either, if thats had it that'll give you plenty of travel too.

does your bike have the standard calipers for your model? and indeed original m/c?

could be calipers have been replaced with one with larger pots, or the m/c has been replaced with a smaller bore item.

No its all original, I think RobB is on to something with the m/c though.

It kinda makes sense, assuming there are no leaks in the system, which there cant be otherwise it would have probably emptied itself out by now, you have braided lines which should have firmed things up theres no other reason for it give you a handful of travel other than the master cylinder has had it. A perfectly good system should feel rock hard when you pull the lever in, if it pulls all the way back to the bar then its gotta be the m/c.
