Brakes

Post by Casey708 »

Hi guys,

If I leave my bike for a couple of days, my disks completely rust over and lock up which I have to rock back and forth to free them up, particularly the front. After riding them they look fine but will literally go all orange and horrible overnight. I clean the bike regularly as I commute to uni on it which covers it in road salt and crap. Its strange but anyone got a solution? :smt017

:smt003 only use WD40 if the brakes are squeeking! lol only joking. Ive got a cover for it but it stays locked up in the garden. I suppose the frost and what not hasnt helped.

same here discs used to rust overnight but never locking up, i'd imagine there is a build up of crud around the pistons and they aren't retracting properly, might be worth taking the pads out and cleaning the piston and surrounding areas.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

It will depend on what type of pads you have.
Some sintered pads will stick to the disk as the disk rusts and it feels like they have locked on.
My EBC HH's do it on my work bike

My bike has recently started doing this! I've got the EBC HH pads but might change them because I dont like them.

You can slide a bit of thin card or paper between the discs and the pads might help it stop sticking.

make sure there is copper grease on the caaliper to pads not on the discs that will stop it seizing more then likely ur pads are on the metal or ur pistons are seized

Hi,

The corse of pads sticking to the discs is the salt from the roads, you will find that this will only happen during the winter when them salt spreading monkeys cake the roads.

Mines does this overnight too, and the longer its left standing the harder it is to break them free. It also does it after an 8 hour shift at work.

Its just the pad and disk fusing together due to corrosion. Nothing you can do really to stop it afaik. Just try not to leave them for days.
