Hi guys, new to all of this too! Have had problems with no spark on my zx400 A 1985 and have traced it back to the CDI Unit. Due to the original part being so expensive, I have sourced a CDI Unit from a 1999 ZXR400. Do you think this will be transferable?
Have attached a docco of both wiring diagrams, can anyone shed any light?
Cheers,
Tris

Re: no spark on my zx400 A 1985
ill go through it with you like this-
YOUR WIRE COLOUR | WIRE COLOUR OF L CDi
a minor caveat, i dont have the 1999 wiring diagram, so i will show you how to attach it to a 1994 L CDi, ill try to take a picture to show you where the L wires connect to the CDi
these are all the same in both bikes:
black/white | black white
yellow | yellow
black | black
green | green
black/yellow | black/yellow
green/black | green/black
these 2 need to be made up, and im pretty sure they can use the same feed wire:
? | grey (you need to make a switched live wire, i suggest a feed from your ignition YELLOW wire that goes to the kill switch, on this feed wire alone you will need to insert a 1W 100ohm resistor)
? | brown (you can use the same YELLOW ignition feed wire BEFORE you add the resistor!)
as an alternative to this, if it will fit, use an L model ignition barrel as this has the resistor in it, and will have the two switched live wires as seperate wires.
this is redundant:
red | N/A (there is no need for this wire, cut it and tape over the end).
this should work...no guarantees as its not something i have ever done. please check it over yourself and see if you agree/disagree.

Hi Banner, all sounds promising to me. I'm willing to give it a go but I'm still confused as to where the wires go on the new plug. Have attached a picture of the new plug. Can you help?
