white crusty stuff on battery

my bike's been running a bit dodgy today so i decided to have a look at the battery,when i took the seat off i could clearly see crusty white stuff all over the negative battery point,could this be why its not running good? anybody know why this is caused?

hi. this is sulphur deposits. can be caused from over charging the battery or some cheap ones do it anyway. its nothing to worry about really jus clean in off with a wire brush but dont breath the dust in! grease your batteries terminal and all will be ok

the older ones amongst us use vaseline on the battery terminals, the time you have to worry is when your batteries leaking acid and the white crusty stuff is all over your frame!

its just on the battery none on the frame as yet,as pete says i think its caused because its a cheap battery,thanks for the advice.
