yeah sounds like the battery isnt charging properly and when you switch the lights on its sapping the battery power and killing the motor.

Not sure if it is the reg/rec now
Sounds tempremental. Have you got a multimeter? Id say check the ignition switch, since that may be the only thing you are touching other than the solenoid, it could be on its way out perhaps. Do the lights below the clocks come on? Neutral light etc...

ok.. tried a bit of work on the bike checked the junction box. one of the 10 fuses wasnt working properly. because as soon as i replaced it with a spare the lights etc came on. BUT! still the bike wouldnt start it would just make a clicking sound. any guesses??

You sure the battery is fully charged? Usually only get the clicking noise when its flat or run down. Maybe try the old starter solenoid again?

Is the headlight staying on even with the ignition switched off?
Out of interest is yours an import? And do you have a on/off light switch on the left handlebar? Mines an import and the headlights come on automatically with the ignition when you goto start it (so has no on/off switch), but if the motor stalls it stays on untill you switch the ignition off. Just a thought.

well o. the on/off switch on my bike is on the right handle bar. just about the starter button. either way putting a new battery in didnt solve anything

i didnt have time to fit the reg/rec as it was dark. still i had it starter earlier for a breif moment. it wouldnt tick over though i forgot to put the choke on. silly me haha but still same problem with the lights/ starting. i REALLY need help
