well i have an import bike which has funny switch gear, i only have the option of having hi beam on or normal lights, no side and no off. when i turn the key the rear light comes on but the headlights only turn on when i start the bike because it has to power a relay i guess.

problem now is the lights dont come on and i cant fine the problem, checked all the wiring from the headlights, to the switches to the ignition switch, to the relays, to the battery the whole wiring is fine no breaks or resistive joints and i assume the realy is ok. however in the image diagram in the manual it doesnt show a relay for the headlights, the wiring diagram says that the headlight should come on when they key is turned just as the tail light does.

any ideas what to do???

Checked the bulbs? Only thing you havent listed.

Other than that i can only assume the relay has had it, does the rear light work off the same relay as the head light?

no the tail light and headlights are different circuits and the bulbs are fine, i still cant find the relay for normal run lights, but the full beam relay is fine. tested it and it works. however i cannot get main beams on without having run lights to start with. i will ponder over the wiring diagrams and see if i cant make a bridging piece.

thanks for your speedy response though rob

I have an import too and the lights only come on after the engine has fired - cranking with the starter, or turning the key does not. The only way to then turn them off is with the key - kill switch doesn't affect them.
Turning the key however, does turn the tail light on.

I know this is pretty obvious and unhelpful but I thought I'd clarify what conditions do what and so give you an idea on where to look.

I'd like to know how the lights operate as I had them cut out on me on a pitch black road. I've never trusted it at night since. Changing the battery solved my problem so I never investigated further but keep us updated on how you get on. Likewise if I find anything, I'll let you know.

Sorry for the pretty useless post!
