Charging, Please help!

My ZXR400L 1991, is having problems, iv taken it to a garage but i seem to be telling him more than he is telling me whats wrong with it so iv given up on him and desided to take actions myself. Iv checked the bike over and the battery isnt charging at all apart from when the bike is idleing or at very low revs then the battery starts to power the bike rather then the bike powering the battery while in movement. the garage did fit a new regulator/rectifier but this did not sort out the problems so i think its the alternator/stator, can anyone confirm that or have any other ideas? if so where would you go about finding a replacment alternator/stator as the internet seems to go blank when it comes to that part or does someone have one which they would like to sell me? Any help would be greatly appriciated. Cheers

yep sounds like the stator coil has gone, you can test the charging circuit, check out the manual it will tell you how to do it. i think basically you disconnect the wire from the alternator and check the voltage across the 3 wires which should amount to 43v min.

cheers for the help, iv checked it out and seems completly ruined, how would i find a replacement or is there any way of replacing the coils so works again? any suggestions? thanks alot

I guess you've solved this. Nevertheless there's a great fault finding PDF for motorcycle charging problems I've found works very well! http://www.electrosport.com/technical-r ... -guide.php

Hi,
Im having a similar problem on my ZXR 400 L2.
The battery is holding charge, but the bike is not charging it up while riding and runs flat after around 15 minutes of riding.
The battery was replaced in July.

I measured the voltage at the battery when running at 5000rpm. Multimeter showed 12.5v, but it did fluctuate a little.
So i suspect the stator coil / alternator.

The manual says to check the voltage across the 3 wires that come from the alternator.
I traced the wiring to this connector.

There is one black wire and two black/red wires.

I disconnected it and checked voltage across the terminals:

both while the bike is idleing and when at 4000rpm.
I put the two leads from my multimeter to the black and black/red wires.
No voltage reading.
I could not get a voltage reading in any combination.
Its possible i may have my multimeter set on the wrong setting. It was reading the battery voltage fine though.

Am i testing this in the right way and therefore my stator coil is faulty, or am i doing it totally wrong, hence the 0v readings.

I have put the battery on charge so i can re test everything tomorrow.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Jason

Yep you should have readings of 43v+ on each pair of black wires (3 readings in total). Make sure you have a good connection between the wires and multimeter (is the connector block dodgy?). If you've got no readings or a low output I'd take a look at the stator before going further.
