I bought my ZXR a few months back but as there was no alarm with it i want to buy one and fit it.

Ive been looking on ebay and the likes but tbh i dont know whether some of the alarms on there are decent, i wanna spend around £60 maximum and id be eternally greatful if u cud advice me on good alarm systems

I had an alarm on mine and it was nothing but trouble. It would go off randomly at night and once coming home from Yorkshire I stopped at a station to fill up, paid, went back to the bike and the alarm wouldn't disarm. I couldn't start the bike or move it for atleast an hour until suddenly it worked. The next day it got ripped out.

£60 for an alarm isnt much tbh, the top range go for 3-400 so I'd imagine it would do more harm than good.

Waste of money you'd be better buying a really good lock/chain and locking your bike to a good ground anchor or something immovable.

The scumbags use a fridge van and pick your bike up and chuck it the back before you even hear the alarm once in the back of a fridge van it can alarm to it's hearts content........no one will hear.........................

Well its always chained to a grand anchor at home and work and its always chained to something solid if theres not an anchor, the van men are monkeys, theres been quiet a few active round manchester, especially up rivington. My eyes are always on my bike when im paying for petrol and practically park it inside the petrol station shop :p

where do you stand on returning an alarm if it plays up like urs did scott?

The one on my 7R was fine till it did exactly what scotts did, was instantly taken off after that. Im with Cargo, a good lock and chain for a bike will take far longer for someone to steal than an alarm that everyone is probably going to ignore.

I think its almax who do that chain thats practically impossible to get through even when its been frozen with nitrogen, its 130 quid which is twice what you wanna pay but its far better than a 400 quid alarm. Ive seen a video on you tube.

Did you both have the same alarm system?

I agree with u both tbh, i use an oxford hardcore chain and padlock on mine which i carry in my rucksack whenever i take my bike out and its never left unchained unless in within a few feet of it.

I forget what alarm system was on it now i think it was a meta system which ive had before on my first ZXR and both bikes have had the beeper go so you only knew it was armed when the indicators flashed but never knew if the thing was going off.

Another thing to think about is how much discount you will get from your insurers if you have one fitted. Ive heard of people paying hundreds of pounds for a good quality alarm but only getting a small percentage of discount that will take years to get your money back for the alarm.

If you are real keen to install an alarm I have one kicking about that I took off a bike. It was working fine and has the key fob etc. You would need to install yourself or know someone who is ok with electrics but I can mark up the various cables so that you know where they go.

have an alarm on my bike, and regret the day I fitted it. Mine was over £300 and still gives me hassle, I would imagine that the cheap ones are likely to be even worse.

Well im glad to say u've all swayed me against getting an alarm

How do u lot rate those disc lock alarms though?

My thought was i get the added protection of the disc lock and alarm, aswell as my chain, and if it does decide to throw one and not shut up screaming i can simply throw it in my bag and ride off.

My ZXR400 L3 has a Datatool System 3 fitted to it. (It was like this when I purchased the bike) so I assume this particular alarm system is fittable, but it would appear this was done by a proffessional and not a DIY job. Although I'm sure it's perfectly possible to fit one yourself. (This alarm works quite well, I like it although it takes some getting used to and you'll find yourself setting your own alarm off alot for about a month heh..)
