Hi there,

I'm taking my test (at long last!!) on Wednesday. My aim was to do it on the schools 500, but the weight was too much for me to move in and out of the parking bays for module 1. I already have a lovely ZXR400 (in pink i may add :D) waiting for me, which obviously will need to be restricted. I have a 1992 import. Is it easy enough to restrict these if you buy a kit and do it yourself? My hubby is pretty good at mechanical stuff. I found a restrictor kit on eBay for just over £40, which includes the certificate for insurance/police if I should require it. Other than that, the only garage around is quoting £232 for kit and labour, which after having to pay for my test is a lot of money but i'm eager to get on the road!!

Also, will restricting the bike affect the handling at all? I've heard some reports that restricted bikes are not very nice and enjoyable to ride and can be quite dangerous. I'm guessing this depends on which bike tho?!?!

Any help from anyone would be great :)

Hi,

Tank off, airbox off, carbs off.
Drop the washers on top of the carb rubbers.
Cabs on, airbox on, tank on.

You are then set for fun, but only a restricted amount of said fun :D

one suspects that carb rubbers need to come off and then washers are fitted and held in place by carb rubbers


I also wonder is this why we see so many with strange idle problems alledgedly cause by air leaks at the carbs rubbers

If that was the case.... would fuel not pool in the top half of the rubber?

But I gave been known to be wrong....

From an air leak and ease of fitting point of view your version seems better to me

No they don't make the bike dangerous, just accelerates slower, can't really go above 12k, and tops out around 110. If anything the restrictors make you concentrate on other aspects of riding such as braking and cornering and how to keep momentum up as you can't just twist the throttle and be gone. It's still enough to get you into trouble though if the mood takes you!

ive only ever seen the ones Cargo posted for the zxr400 that fit between the head and rubbers, and yes i did wonder the same regards air leaks.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.
