Running terrible

Post by bikenut »

Any ideas, bike was laid up for 8 years, just got it back on the road.
Totally standard L5, carbs were badly gummed up, stripped and cleaned them so they are gleaming.
Pilot screws are set to 1 & 3/4 turns.
Starts but won't idle, just cuts out whether choke is on or not.
No power above 3000 revs and struggles to hit 80.
Will finally idle when it's warm but still no power.
Also if you rev it and let go of the throttle it drops to 2k and then takes a while to drop to 1.2k.

Any ideas?

I can tell you that the revs hanging at 2k then dropping to 1.2k are a sign of leaking inlet rubbers. A check of the carb clamps making sure they are tight is in order, if still no joy then possibly that o rings between the inlet rubbers and engine block may need changing. You can get away with a light smear of high temp silicone sealer, id say do that to see if it fixes it, if it does change the orings.

Look at that first, it may sort your other problems too.
