Engine looses power at around 10,000Rpm

Post by cardboardcutouts »

Hi all,

I have recently got my bike out for a ride on the odd day of clear weather that there has been during this ridiculous snow. The first time i got it out a couple of weeks ago, whilst going along the M4 i came across a power problem where the engine would just seem to loose all power at high Rpm rates, the only way i can describe it would be like when you get winded almost like it was gasping for either air or fuel? So anyway, i got it out again this morning and rode to my dads house where indeed again at high rpm it did the same thing, so when i got there i stripped the bike down a bit thinking maybe i had an issue with either the air filter or fuel filter...
Air filter was seemingly fine and clean, but the fuel filter looked pretty ropey so i popped to the bike shop to try and get another one, but just my luck they were shut! so went to halfords and found one very similar so thought what the hell and put it on. The bike seemed to run as per usual, if not a little better, but went out to test ride it and it still does it! Always around the 10,000 rpm mark.
Just thought i would post on here to see if anyone could shed some light as to what i need to do now? Would this be something wrong with the carbs? Maybe a blockage? and if so what would i need to do to unblock/fix?

I am no engine master but don't mind taking it apart if it is something fairly simple...

Sorry for rambling on!

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

mike

has it always had this 'problem' or has it only just started?
does it have an after market exhaust etc fitted....maybe the carbs/jetting havent been setup properly

Nope its always been lovely, it does have an aftermarket can on it. its a renegade. The only thing i have done to it since it was working fine is change the clocks. bought a set with mph rather than kph. But that cant have done anything surely? Do you think maybe i need to get it balanced?

ahh the clocks! i'v heard the uk clocks can have restrictions in on the rare occasion if that makes you lose power at 10k im not sure i think it just restricts it to the rpm and thats it change the clocks round try that just to be sure its unlikely though

Sounds like you've got a Japanenese model with a restricted CDI.

I'm not going to explain all the details but if you have fitted UK clocks the Jap restricted CDI will have gone to a default 10,000 rpm limit

Lets have a picture of your CDI I'm guessing it's got a yellow sticker on it

When you removed the KPH clocks was there a little black connector that you had to unplug ?
And no where to plug it into on your MPH clocks ?

Sorry for me to sound completely stupid but whats CDI? And yes there was a connector on the old one which i did not have one the new one, so this is some sort of restriction device?

its under your main seat mate take that off and you have your fuse box directly above the battery then like a tiny bit behind that towards the back is your cdi have a quick look and see what colour sticker you have on it
