Starting

Mate of mine got knocked off of his ZXR last year and only just started getting it back together. He fitted a new generator casing, put battery on a long charge and went to start it. All it did was make the cicking sound the relay makes when the battery is nearly flat. So he shorted one of the terminals of the battery to the solenoid and it fired up no problem.

Am i right in saying the starter relay has had it? Im sure someone here had the same problem, possibly Jamz?

Mine has a weird similar prob but its only on occasions.
When the engine is warm it has real problems starting. Sounds like the battery is flat and barely turns over quick enough to start. Even when the battery is fully charged :smt017

Dunno if thats possibly a similar thing, not that i know what causes it!!!!

it might be where that battery is not holding the charge propaly, charges up and ses that its fine on the charger but as soon as you put eny load on it it totaly drains it :smt012

Thats the thing i dont think it is, cos when one of the terminals is shorted to the starter motor casing, it turns the bike and starts fine. Cheers for the response guys. :smt001

right then the starer solenoid shoud have a constent live from the battery (test that to make shore there isnt eny brakes in the wire) if the solenoid was old and then you could be getting a volt drop which would make it sownd like a flat battery or if there isnt a good feed from the starter switch then that wouldent let the starer solenoid to work properly. i hope that this all helps and gives you some things to go and check :smt001

Has there been a solution for this?

i have a temperamental problem the same, tho it can do it anytime, i have to wiggle my wire form the solenoid to the motor, it has a kink in it. it does the job so im not replacing it for £25! that kawasaki quoted me.

also wen it is hot it turns slowly, nearly always starts tho, i always thoguht this was because of higher compression, as its hot, and more strain on the motor?

Hmm dunno possibly ..

I am not running a base gasket, so I suspect that might be why it sounds so lazy on the starter ..

Shouldn't make that much diff tho.

I agree that that is the relay. the switching for high current is duffered so it acts as if there is no load across the high current side.

Its not ocassional either, its every time I need to start a hot bike.

could be robB cos when i had my starting probs, it wouldn't fire by running a live straight to the starter, and thats cos the battery had had it.

I think hes got it sorted now, hes slowly getting the bike back together, keep getting calls off of him with 'where does this go' :smt005

Next time i speak to him ill ask him how he sorted it. Hes a member here, by the name of 'SEAN'
