Engine Cut Out on A14! Help Please!

Post by arkell »

Hi there! I was out on a ride this afternoon which was great but then on my way home down the A14, where I was overtaking in the outside lane, I suddenly lost all power and was forced to pull over. I was doing about 80mph and was in 4th gear I think, so it must have been at around 10k revs. I then couldnt get it started again, then realised my milometer/fuel gauge was at 120 miles, which is nearing empty. I was only a few miles home so I got someone to run out some unlkeaded in a jerry can for me, but still she wouldnt start. I played around with the fuel tap, but even on 'on' it wouldnt start. About 15 minutes later it just about started, however wouldnt idle I really had to rev it, i set off and took my junction, came to the top of the slip road and it cut out again. I couldnt start it again (even with the help of a nice bloke on a CBR600 who kindly stopped), but i pushed it to a hill and bump started it (eventually) but it only worked when I was flying down this hill (which is very long and steep!). I went to turn right into my road and as I slowed and dropped down to 2nd it cut out again so I pushed it home.

sorry about the long winded story but i hope you are able to help! It was running fine up to now, and i just had a 300quid service including carbs cleaning. I did around 500 miles on it last week over 3 days and it was perfect- it seems strange it would turn nasty on me after a short afternoon ride!

I have left it to cool now for a couple hours but still nothing. It just make the usual noise when you press the starter but never actually fires up... :(

Help urgently needed as I need to go to work tomorrow!

cheers

hmmm the engine starts on full choke, but the second i lessen the choke it cuts out. Would you agree that this is cos there is a fuel pump problem? As the choke draws fuel into the engine, then when it is lessened, there is nothing pushing fuel into the engine...therfore fuel pump...?

Im not much of a mechanic at the ripe old age of 19 so any help is much appreciated!

So can anyone tell me how I check if the fuel pump/fuel relay is working fine??

Cheers

Oh and what is a rectifier???

Theres a test for the pump relay and pump in the manual mate

http://www.zxrworld.co.uk/Manuals/L%20M ... r%2015.pdf

page 30 of the PDF :)

The rectifier converts the AC electricity from the alternator into DC to charge the battery, this is also regulated to keep its output at a steady voltage under load and is why they are refered to as 'regulator/rectifier'. Its all one unit on the ZXR.

Theres also test for those in the manual in that same link just above which starts on page 12.

SUCCESS! Took the petrol tank off, found that the pump/relay was working fine, then I fiddled around with this translucent bubble, which was full of brown gunge, cleaned it out and cleaned the filter, fired her up and runs perfect again!

Thanks to everyone who helped out!

There is a filter on them, L4 and L5 i believe, though my L3 has one. Its in the elbowed bit of tubing just after the tranluscent bubble.
These things are sent to try us!!

ooer, how did you manage to clean inside that?

That has nothing to do with the fueling so i suspect something that you moved before you did that probably fixed it. That bubble connects to the carbs via the cooling system where the hot coolant warms the carbs to prevent carb icing.
