Cleaning Regimes - what's best?

Hi all,
Just got my ZXR-Lmodel recently, its a 2nd hand bike, and I was wondering...
i)what's the best way to get rid of minor blemishes on the aluminium frame between the handle bars. Would it work for the other metal parts?
ii) What's the best way to polish the bike, without damaging the plastic fairing or decals on the tank?
