Can I suggest that doing this job or the head gasket with the engine out is a fantastic opportunity to really clean you bike and get into all those nasty horrible places that can't normally be reached.

You can also get at the engine properly and clean it too

Just a thought

Started it all off with engine in situ, taking it out would be an option if it all
went pear shaped.
Tried unsuccessfully to get the chain off without grinding. There must be
a knack, and I don't have it.
Have still to go dremmel crazy......

Managed to break the cam-shaft oil feed by trying to remove one set of
caps, instead of both at same time, so I'm waiting on a replacement
coming from AMS.

Off over the border into Engurland for a funeral tonight, so it's all on hold.
The weekend will be grinding then putting it all back together, correctly,
hopefully.

yeh, done camchain and headgasket both ways, i think its easier to do an H in the frame than it is an L, but if you are an "engine strip virgin" its probably best to take it out so you can see what you are doing more clearly.

If you'd seen the thunderstorm I had to race in last Saturday then yes they do on occasion get a little dirty.

Would have been better off on a canoe

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Not sure exactly waht you mean by "right chain knife"

There are two camchain guides............. the front one can be removed when the camchain is out and it can be lifted up and out
The other or rear one is part of the tensioner mechinism it is held at the bottom by the tensioner and at the top by a bolt to remove it you need to remove the camchain and detatch it from tensioner and you need to remove the bolt.............and of course like I always tell people it is easier to do a camchain change with the engine out...well you can NOT get at the bolt holding the top of the rear camchain guide with the engine in frame

None taken.............

To be honest I've never got that close to a H model so there must be a diference.............anyone got a picture of a H model close up of that area would be nice.

I will have another look at my L and see if there is anyway to get at that bolt but I'm 99.9% sure that it can't be done.

aye, there's far more clearance between the head and the frame spars on the H's, you'd need magic tools to do it on an L, i did it on an H by cutting down an allen key to the right length.

That is the best answer cargo.I am asking because I am changing that knifes on the KLE and that is night mare. You nead to disintegrate whole engine to change secound camchain knife tensioner.Because ther is one bolt and when you disintegrate engine then you can remove that bolt and knife.
Because of that I am asking for zxr 400

yea i used a hex bit in a screwdriver holder with many extensions and the screwdriver had a 3/8 driver slot so stuck me ratchets on that :)

Does anyone have photos of the bottom sprocket area, after they've ground (or cut)
the metal away to get the chain on?
Can't get the chain on without removing metal, and wondered if there were any photos
out there, of you guys' handywork.

Cheers
Stephen
