NEW TO ZXR 400 (M MODEL)

Post by Jubby » Fri Jan 05, 2018 6:44 am

Hi All,

Firstly my name is Dale Jubb I am 32 years old and I am a bike-o-holic.

I have always been a 2 stroke man on track owning RGV's, Kr1's and Aprilia RS250 MK2 99, had the odd 600 Gsxr k6 and on road had a gsxr 600 k5, FZ8 (R1 cams fitted) and a MT09 (FZ09).

I have not been a road rider for approx. 2 years and have just been focusing more on track time and aim to do a full season racing in 2019 picking up a few rounds towards the back end of this year 2018.

I currently own a Honda RS125 nx4 2008 (had for approx. 3 weeks not ridden yet) and yesterday I swapped a RGV VJ21 for a ZXR400. The RGV was honest and I paid very little for it but it needed barrels honing and re nical-sealing and I am just not getting to it at the moment with kids, mortgage etc. I figured that running the GP bike and another 2 stroke is going to hurt the pocket a fair bit.

Turns out I got myself a bit of a barn find. Its an SP M Model. SP Cams, CR gearbox, fully adjustable suspension, igniter, timing plate. It is missing the FCR's but no big deal.

Now from what I know so far it has been raced in JAPAN as I can see scrutineering paint marked on the head, it was imported into Australia and probably used here in our F3, FSX series at some point. The guy I bought it off decided to put a 250 compliance plate on it and also run c model zxr 250 fairings. These bikes was never imported into Australia so that why he went the 250 route. Bike was ridden for approx. 1000klms on road and I got it.

The 400 mitsibushi SP igniter was not working so the previous owner stuck a 250 ZX2 igniter in it and a also made up (yes made up) a timing plate to suit the zx2 igniter.

After riding the bike it comes on very very strong from 9k right through to red line.

He tried to run dynajets but found them too rich and went back to standard with the CVK's I think they are.

This is all I know from my 24 hours of research. I am here to learn and get this old girl eventually back to her glory. For now at least she will be playing second fiddle to the Honda RS125 and will be my spare track bike on practice days when I have had enough of doing plug chops and running the 125. I aim to get the 125 running safe and understanding the changes it requires with weather conditions in preparation for next years racing adventure. I also want to chip away at the 400 and get that to a state where I may even be able to run it in F3 against them smelly oily RGV's.

Get ready for the questions as I strip her down.

I also have a cracked engine mount to the right of the bike if your are sat on it.

Are these replaceable items or do I need to weld up the item.

I used to own a FZR250R EXUP, I sold it to a guy in Leicester, wonder if by chance it is the same one ? Must be 20 years ago. I think it was a 1998 F reg. What a screamer.
