New Member...

Hi guys thought Id drop by and introduce myself....

Im Tom from Lichfield, my mate went out and got himself a nice project (Honda VFR400) and has pestered me to get one so I bid on ebay and won this bike a 1990 ZXR400 (an import) is is currently a non starter and I plan to use this as a project total strip and rebuild to learn more about bikes;

The question I have is do I keep it stock colours or go for my own choice, what do people think about changing the factory finish of a bike espeically if I plan to sell it in the future?

Hey dude,

Have you just come over from The Realm Of Nobcat aka BCF?

If you plan on selling it, get it back to stock. You will get more money for it mate.

Hey dude do you want to give someone the respect they are due and address me correctly?!

Im just asking a question which I already kind of know stock is the best option but hey I dont know how long I will have it for and/or when/if I will be selling it once Ive done it up!!!

Also BCF WTF?!

Agree with cansa as stock will get you a better re-sale, my L9 is a custom paintjob but i bought it like which i love the colour of mine but others might not agree)

Depends what your looking at for the bike... if your purely buying it to get it running again and in full working order then keep it standard, but if your planning on riding it on a regular basis and keeping it for a long period, do whatever you want :excited

All i was asking is if you are the dude on another forum (BCF) that I recommend this forum to.
He also has just bought a zxr400 and is asking the same question.
I wasnt having a dig at you, but you have just shown me how much of a tart you are. :wanker

And as for addressing you correctly.... Does this mean that "dude" is not acceptable.

While we all like a bit of banter and stuff me especially and to show you guys I am not a novice I posted pictures of my other bike, I am a fully competent person and know what I am talking about before I ask questions but to me the easiest thing to do is ask a question on a forum like this and see what people think. I like to start a discussion about subjects and see others view points.

Most other forums I am a member of come across and say hi when I put a post introducing myself before trying to accuse me of coming from some nobcat realm that I have never herd of, then to top it off your last post regarding what a tart I am please you dont even know me so please leave that sort of talk for the playgound when your at school!

Im sure you acutally want new members to stick around because your doing a great job of making me think why am I bothering!

Wildkid -> I like your thinking however I only bought it as I wanted a project to increase my knowledge about bikes, I am not a pure sports bike fan in terms of the riding position hence why I have a Z750 (but I do love the look of them) and these early 1990's models are classics IMO so with regards to keeping it as stock or changing the colours I just dont know what I will want to do with it in 1, 2 ,3....years time if your with me. Hell I dont even know where or what I will be doing next week I am that type of guy....so my debate continues!

So dont come on here giving it "the big i am" and moaning and whinging because you dint know what BCF is.
If you had the ability to use google and search for BCF you will see what the 3rd result is.

No worries and thanks for your opinion, think Im going to keep it stock until I decide if I want to keep it, knowing me and what I am like I will probably keep it however it will depend on the frequency of me riding it if I already have my so called 'daily' rider.

Hello Tom, and welcome. There's plenty of evidence that ZXRs are going to be a future classic. They are one of the more expensive 400s and becoming sought after. Now is a good time to buy as prices are about as low as they are going to be and there are plenty to choose from. As more get trashed / abused the good ones will be harder to find. It won't be too long before bits start getting hard to source and the first to get scarce will be bodywork, clocks, exhausts etc. The bikes that will command the best prices if they become classic are those which are standard, so think very carefully about doing something irreparable to it (respraying bodywork in a non-standard scheme, hacking undertrays to bits etc.). Modding by swapping parts is fine, especially if you keep the OEM bits you remove as you can offer them with any subsequent sale to a buyer who wants standard.

Don't forget too that modding a 1990s look to bring it up to date (LEDs, shorty levers etc) will look out of date in another 10 years. So then what you you got? A bike that looks old but not even original old. Remember coloured screens...........? Good mods never date.

Thanks Tirpitz I totally agree with you with respect to totally OEM and love the stock look so I will not be changing anything for anything other than stock or OEM pieces, it is an imported bike but that doesnt matter really.

It is currently a non runner and like I said Im going to strip it and re-build it for my pleasure so I want to keep it as stock as possible I just think if I was to keep it a new paint job would look nice (incidently I was thinking white and black).

it comes with a full spare set of fairings and exhaust as well as a UK speedo that is currently not fitted, however the fairings are fibreglass replicas not oem so I have the option at least to keep the OEM and play with the replica panels if your with me?

I am just exploring the possibiltiies at the moment and am fully up with the fact these will be classics one day and I am a big fan of 90's styling both on bikes and cars (I used to have a 1990 325i motorsport convertible an ultimate classic IMO) so we will see what becomes of this bike over the next year ;-)

Ah well, if the fairings are replica then go for it. But what about the tank and the sub-frame side panels, so you have spares for those? Or would you leave those?

I'm not sure about the availability of decals if you need to replace them. Cradley Kawasaki would be able to tell you what was available. You may be able to get the right ones for your import model direct from Japan - speak to Mori Man on here. Certain ZXR750 decals might be the same.

If you are having the frame repainted and the OEM is silver I believe a Volvo colour is a direct match. If you're having it powder coated no doubt the coaters can colour match to what's on it.

Tirpitz thats the issue there is no spare tank or sub frame panels, may try and source some and keep the stock in my garage I just dont know yet, although saying that I fancy getting the frame and stuff painted either mat black or gloss to compliment the white that would take it away from stock....they are all ideas at the mo until I go collect it strip it down I've got plenty of time to decide.

I have been searching for decals on the net trying to find complete examples for the bike but cannot find any, apart from looking at other peoples bikes and gauging it I think!?

You're going to have to jump one way or the other then Tom.

I'm pretty sure full decal kits are still available but as it's an import model probably not in the UK. As I say, give Mori Man a PM, he's in Japan and is well trusted on here to do business with. Shipping is much cheaper than you might expect. If he can't get them no-one can.
