hi, im andy, 21 & from the south east
i grew up in essex, moved to sussex and now in portsmouth doing a BSC in computer network management and design.... yeeeaaaaa!!!!!!
well. will be once term starts agian.

i got myself my first propper bike a zxr, i fell in love with it as soon as i layed eyes on it, i think it was the air inlets :P
anyway, its a 1991 l1, i paid like £400 for it but it needed just a bit of tlc so ive spent the last month and half doing it in my spare time.
everything seemed to be fixable and we shall see since next thursday its got its mot and wednesday i have my theory.

when i got it it was mainly electrical problems which took me 4 hours to completely solve on a saturday.
why didnt the indicators work? because they werent plugged in.
why didnt the head lights work? because one of the bulbs blew and the other one didnt have a bulb, just the metal holder.
you no stupid little stuff, nothing that a £6.99 crimping set from halfords and 3 rolls of electrical tape couldnt solve.

as for the bike, I am not sure what condition the engine is in, but i do no it had a cam chain done about 5,500 miles ago, now sitting on 44k.
new spark plugs
new oil + filter
took everything apart cleaned it and put it back together again.
i put a new front and rear sprocket + chain on it teeth are 16/f and 43/r and does 70 in first.

it was originally white and had been stickered by someone wearing a burbery hat
but its now matt black and carbon fibre with green stripes
yes carbon fibre, i thought ide give it a go, not the actual carbon fibre stuff but the 3m-di noc stuff, its like heat shrink and will apparentally mould to any shape, i didnt even attempt the air inlets as my mind couldn't even comprehend how it would fit.

oooh yea i also modified the side fairings so that they wrap nicely to the radiator,
ive lost the usb lead to my phone but another one is on the way from amazon for £1 so sometime this week ill have pics of the finished product to show you all biggrin

theres only one problem with it atm and thats starting, starts up first poke of the button but if you rev it, it dies, i have to wait couple mins and then its fine, other than that no complaints.
**insurance is dirt cheap, MCE or quickfit want £185 for the year i have 0 ncb and 6 points.

Thanks

Andy

p.s. you've all helped me so much while I re-built my bike so thank you again.

CDI stands for capacitor discharge ignition

SP model is a variant of the regular H and L models...............a SP while still a road bike was aimed at a 400cc racing class in Japan which became Super Sport 400

The SP has flatside carbs, close ratio gearbox, more adjustable suspension, different CDI, single seat, different subframe.

It is a highly prized model much sought after................and as standard it comes with a 16T front sprocket.if you have bought a SP for £400 not only do you have a bargain but you'll make a few quid on it as well...................

However I/we need further evidence

i think its an l1 mate, but im not sure now.
i put the 16 on the front sprocket, but it has 5 gears not 6, so it could be the sp version.

do you mean where the air box connects to the carbs?
the suspension, rear could need a new one soon, its a bit rusted and squeeky
but you might be onto something, the fuel tank doesnt even look like it meant for the bike

if you put the 16T sprocket on then the odds are it's just a regular L1

However every ZXR400 ever built has 6 gears if you are only getting 5 then there is something wrong
